Q: Not able to use a tape archive

Dear friends,

newb warning :-)

FCPX 10.1 on a single HDD iMac late 2009 with El Capitan and a Sony TRV-900 recoder connected via FW800 to miniDV cable.

If I import from camera everything works as expected (save for the recording segmented in many small fragments of different lengths possibly due to very old tape/camera dirty head???).

I wanted to use the CREATE ARCHIVE function instead to capture all of the tape.

The dialog asked me how to name the capture (trv-001) and after 57 minutes of the tape (which is a 60 mins physical tape) at the end of the scenes I hot the "Stop Import" button (the last 3 minutes are blank tape).

Now in the Bob/Movies folder I see the trv-001.fcarch file with the keyhole on a movie reel icon of 10.26 GB which is the size I expected.

The problem is that now within FCP I cannot see this archive in the Libraries/Events pane.

I also tried to open it through the Import screen and manually navigating to the  in the lower pane folder but the fcarch file appears unselectable (greyed out).

Via the Finder of that file I can "Show package contents" and within it I see all the little .mov files I expect.

What stupid thing am I doing ?

I also sought a "Final Cut Pro Archives" folder on the root of my iMac HDD but none exists.

Thank you very much for any help.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), Late 2009, 16GB RAM, 2.8 GHz i7

The archive can only be used from the FCP import window. You should be able to find it from there wherever it's stored.

    Hi Tom,

I need to add that the same procedure (apparently at least) with another (much shorter with only 17 mins of footage) tape, generated a trv003.fcarch file on the file system but within the FCP Import window it's seen as a folder and if I click on the twist it shows all the clips within which I can then import.

The 57' trv001 file of 10.something GB can be made to show its package contents in the Finder but within FCP's import window it shows with the extension trv001.fcarch, no twisty, and is greyed out. Ideas ?

Thanks a lot for trying to help.

Please post screenshots of the import window and finder locations. Not sure what you did and why they're different.

Thank you Tom, here are all screenshots which hopefully will give you a clue. They don't to me :-(

Here under you will find the Finder views and related Get Info of trv001 (the archive NOT working in FCPX) and trv003 (an archive that does work).

From the finder you will find snapshots of the "Show Package Contents" command for both trv001 and trv003.

    Finally the FCPX import windows.

    Thanks a bunch.

I can't see why 001 doesn't work. I would take the media out of the bundle and put it in a folder. If you want a real FCP Archive bundle. You could Andrea Kiel's VirtualCamCard http://www.spherico.com/filmtools/ and make it look like a camera and see if you can make an archive of that. Or you could just make a sparsebundle using his tools to hold the files, but they won't have camera properties then.

Thank you very much! Will abandon hope and just use the individual files.
