iPod Shuffle 4th gen "Red Light Death"

My iPod Shuffle has recently stopped working at all, the only life signal i get is a red light for 5 seconds whenever plugged in then nothing else.

The quick story:
At night i put the ipod to charge attached to my Mac, and when i woke up it died and never worked again or did not show life signals apart from the one above.

Do you have any fixes, or do i need to just straight up buy a new one?

Thanks,

4th gen is still the current shuffle model, so if it's less than one year from purchase date, it's under standard warranty.

Since light does come on initially, the shuffle seems to be getting power. The cause is probably not a faulty USB docking cable. You're using original ultra-short docking cable that came with it, correct?

It is possible that the Mac's USB port is not providing enough power (to charge shuffle's battery) for some reason. Do you happen to have a USB power adapter, like the one that comes with iPhone or other device? If you do, put shuffle's power switch in OFF position, connect docking cable to power adapter, and plug in your shuffle there. See if shuffle's light is different for a power-only connection. (Normally, you should see solid orange light while charging and solid green light when fully charged, with a power-only connection.)

If you get the same red light from a USB power adapter, the most likely cause is a worn out battery that can no longer charge.

If you can't do that test because no USB power adapter, shut down (power off) the Mac and disconnect all USB devices. You can leave standard USB keyboard/mouse connected, if used. If your Mac is a laptop, connect its power adapter (so it's not running on battery power). Put shuffle's power switch in OFF position. Start up your Mac, run iTunes, and connect shuffle to a direct USB port, by itself.

Hello Kenichi,

Unfortunately my iPod is not under warranty anymore, as it was purchased some years ago.

Yes i am using the original, ultra-short docking cable that originally came with it, i do have a power adapter and i did plug in my iPod shuffle but nothing still the same five second red light.

I also tested the Mac option but still the same.

I guess it is the battery is worn out like you stated, where would i be able to replace it? Or is there somewhere i can give the iPod, for recycling as i heard there is some Apple program thingy.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Apple won't replace battery in a shuffle. You may find an independent electronics repair shop who has the expertise to do the work, but keep in mind that a brand new 4th gen shuffle (with new headphones and one-year warranty) costs $49 retail. Repairing probably only makes sense, if you have good skills working with tiny electronics (and soldering) and can do the work yourself.

I don't think you can get recycling credit for an iPod shuffle, but an Apple Store should accept it for recycling. If you plan to go to an Apple Store, you may want to make a reservation with the store's Genius Bar. They won't do any work on your shuffle, but they should do some basic trouble-shooting. Maybe they'll try something you have not tried yet...
