Sep 29, 2016 6:05 PM in response to Brian Dixby LaPastenague,If the airport is normal.. plugged into your network and do use ethernet to your iMac it should work pretty easily.
Unfortunately some update situations.. eg using a proxy server can make updates fail and this is outside of Apple's control.
In fact Apple would do better to give a simple set of instructions for manual updating.. instead they rely 100% on automatic systems that work for the majority. Unfortunately not for all.
What is the exact model of your Airport.. and what firmware is it now running??
An iMac is a perfectly fine tool to run the updates on.. Any mac looks like any other mac to the Airport.. although iOS version airport utility often works better nowadays.
There is a manual method but it sounds like something you would prefer to avoid.
Since it is not an Apple method it does have a bit more complexity than is necessary if apple would support it.
Manual firmware update.
