Q: convert local user to network user
I want to convert a 'local' user to a 'network' user in Active Directory.
I have multiple macs that are connected to a mini server running Server 5.2. Each Mac has one primary user and each user has all their information stored locally on their Mac. I use Chronosync to sync copies of folders between the local Macs and the server. However, shared files are a problem due to permissions. So I want to migrate the users to a network user, but maintain the user folders locally, so I can add the users to a network group to keep permissions straight.
I have Open Directory up and running and have bound the client macs to it. What steps do I follow to create the same user names as a network user on the server and then get all the local files associated with that network user (instead of a local user)? I've seen some older posts describing the process when migrating the files from the local computer to the server, but I want to maintain the user name and folder locations on the local computer but switch to an Open Directory/Local Network Directory user with no home folder on the server (None - Services Only).
