Q: Safari won't respond after El Capitan update last week

Running OS X El Capitan V. 10.11.6 on my mid 2009 macbook pro. I installed the following software updates on 9/21/16: itunes, os x el capitan update, hp printer software update, and digital camera RAW compatibility update. Prior to the update I was using safari without issue. After the update, the app does not respond at all. It does not bounce. Right click says open (there is no force quit) but it does nothing when open is clicked. Show recents results in nothing zoomed out screen. And....my computer will not allow an install of the new mac OS Sierra (likely due to age), so I'm stuck with el capitan. I am able to use Chrome, but safari has all my saved passwords and bookmarks, so I need to access it asap. Help?

Accessing safari in my console shows the following for latest (every time I try to open safari it records this now):

    Hello YuppyHippy,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand from your post that you are not able to open Safari. I know how important it is for you to be able to use Safari on your Mac. I recommend testing the issue while your Mac is in Safe Mode and/or in a new user account. The following articles have the steps you will need to test the issue in both Safe Mode and in a new user account:

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up

    Starting up in safe mode

Follow these steps to start up into safe mode.

        1.    Start or restart your Mac.

        2.    Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key.

        3.    Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

    Best Regards.
