Q: Apple Mail automatically changes font size while typing, Part 2

So, it has been a year-and-a-half since I originally posted the following question and the problem still persists today. A Google search didn't turn anything up, and I'm hoping someone will see this and have a solution.

Here is the original message:

I've been using Apple Mail for about a month now and only just recently did it start exhibiting this unusual behavior where the font type and size of the entire message would change to something different while I was typing! Pressing CTRL+Z a couple times would revert the font to its intended size only to have it change back again a few keystrokes later. I noticed that it only happens when I type a word that contains an apostrophe (it's, David's, we're, isn't, we'll, etc.) and words that get auto-corrected. Going to MAIL | PREFERENCES and changing my Message Font does nothing as the font changes to something not set in Preferences.

I made a short video of myself typing an email so you get an idea of what I'm experiencing -- you can view the video here: https://youtu.be/2mYb9L5ZzDA.

Has anybody experienced this before? What did you do to fix it? Any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

It has to do with the autocorrect. I've seen this when I use a shortcut expander in a web browser. Uncheck your preference for color and see if this goes away.

If no, try setting up a test account or use Guest, see if the problem's global, or just related to your account.

    CREATE A NEW USER

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Users & Groups.

Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.

You can skip signing in with your Apple ID unless you need to test iCloud Mail.

    Turn off spell check

I have check spelling turned off. I like the red squiggly lines so I can correct spelling myself. Autocorrect often puts in the wrong word.

    Hi, Diane!

Thank you so much for replying and providing a possible solution. Unfortunately, this solution did not work for me However, your suggestion did lead me on the right path to finding the solution (after some trial and error, and after turning various features and options on and off): the culprit turned out to be my custom signature! I'm baffled by it myself, but after deleting my signature, and re-adding it (not cut & paste, but a completely new sig), the problem was fixed!

Thank you for taking the time to reply

    Glad you found the fix.

Signatures can also cause problems when you accidentally start typing into the signature field. Your text font and size will take the Sig settings.
