Why does the size of an audio file change when I change the tempo?

Ex when I change the tempo of an imported audio file from 120 to 97bpm it shrinks and when I change it back it gets bigger. Does this have an relevance to it playing back slower or faster when the tempos change? How does tempo affect the speed of playback for imported audio files?

Nothing happens to the audiofile but its visual representation. You see, if you alter the tempo, you alter the duration of a bar, but the size of the bars stays the same. You can clearly see this if you use the seconday ruler (time ruler).

One condition is crucial: flex should be off on the track.

The funny thing is that here the audio appears to stay put, but in fact it changes dramatically.
