The default Apple ID on my iPhone is invalid

I am trying to update apps on my iPhone. The default Apple ID is one that I used many years ago and, for which, I no longer have the password. In "settings" (both icloud and Itunes & App store) I have entered, signed in and saved my current Apple ID (a gmail address), but for some reason, this isn't the ID that comes up when I launch the appstore and try to update my current Apps. I cannot figure out how to change the ID (there is no link nor ability to "log out"). I am hoping this makes sense. Does anyone have any suggestions?

All apps (and any other content from the store) are tied to the account that downloaded them from the store, so only that account can download updates to them (and do in-app purchases in them).

If you can't remember the old account's password : http://iforgot.apple.com

If you want those apps linked to your new account you will have to delete them from your phone and buy and download them on your new account

thansk for the reply. here is the issue, the apple ID that pops up in the appstore on my phone (and cannot be changed) isn'ta valid apple ID. when i go to the iforgot link and enter it, the reply is that apple ID isn't valid. so, i'm stuck. i cannot figure out how to even change the apple ID on the appstore (on phone) so that i can rebuy. note that the AppleID that is listed under Itunes and Apps in Settings is my correct and current one and not the one that keeps popping up from the appstore app

The id that shows for buying/downloading a new app should be the id that's logged in in Settings > iTunes & App Store, and at the bottom of the Featured tab in the App Store app - you can log out of an account by tapping on it in either place and then logging back in. The id that shows in the Updates tab for an app is fixed

The old id isn't an AOL username account : AOL Usernames can no longer be used with the iTunes Store - Apple Support ? If not you could try contacting iTunes Support and see if they can find it, you can contact them via the 'contact us' link at the bottom right of every page on here.
