I did upgrade a mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15" 2.8 GHz i7 to macOS Sierra recently. No performance issues at all.
But I would recommend that you replace your harddrive (if not done yet) to an SSD. That would increase performance hugely.

With 8 GB of memory it should be fine
