Migrating photos from iPhoto to Photos both on hard disk

Hi I have been going crazy to migrate my photos from iPhoto to the Photos app and can't do it.

I have all my photos on a hard disk on iPhoto. I copy the Photos app on another hard disk which is empty and formatted for IOS Mac journaled and while it starts to copy and is at 8% it says I still need 357GB of space. There is plenty of space on the hard disk and don't know why it is saying this. I have the impression that the photos are not migrating to the hard disk but to the MacBook although i drag the iPhoto onto Photos on the hard disk. Any help?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

TO start we need clear details

there is no format " IOS Mac journaled " - the correct format which i assume you mean it Mac OS extended (journaled) - in the info window for the disk what is the format?

You never copy the Photos app anyplace - the Photos App must be in the applications folder on your boot disk

If you want to move the Photos library to an external disk you drag it intact as a single entity - the target disk must be a local disk formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) using a fast wired connection (like FireWire, ThunderBolt or USB), not used as a TimeMachine backup volume and always available prior to launching PHotos

To migrate from iPhoto to Photos make sure the iPhoto library is on a properly formatted volume and then drag it to the Photos icon in the Dock and it will be migrated to Photos - theses links will be helpful

And remember Photos is a totally new program using new workflows and it has a learning curve - - unless you take time to learn and understand it like any new program you will be terribly frustrated

Hi Larry,

The format is correct. I cannot transfer to Photos app on the dock because my Mac doesn't have enough space to do that this is why i tried to transfer the photos which I already have on a hard disk to another hard disk which has space by dragging the iPhoto library to the Photo ap in the second hard disk. Do you understand what I mean?

Right

so as I said

Step 1

If you want to move the Photos library to an external disk you drag it intact as a single entity - the target disk must be a local disk formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) using a fast wired connection (like FireWire, ThunderBolt or USB), not used as a TimeMachine backup volume and always available prior to launching PHotos

and step 2

To migrate from iPhoto to Photos make sure the iPhoto library is on a properly formatted volume and then drag it to the Photos icon in the Dock and it will be migrated to Photos

This migration takes pac on the same disk as he iPhoto library and takes little additional space
