Mail

I use Chrome as my browser and gmail. I never use "Mail". Whenever I try and contact a website my iMac takes me automatically to "Mail". This slows my computer, and it takes sometimes 30 minutes to force quit "Mail". How can I delete "Mail" or avoid or eliminate this problem?

So, based on what you said, you never use any email app? You only access your Gmail account via your browser?

A couple of places to check: System Preferences > Internet accounts > do you have Mail listed there? Try adding Gmail there (I've never used that, so I can't say if an online account would work).

Or, do you have/use an icloud account?

And, what is the designated default email reader in Mail > Preferences > General?

As you have an icloud account, I would think that will automatically invoke the Mail app. I'm not an expert on these since I made a decision not to (trust or) use iCloud; however, since Apple likes to have you sync/integrate/work across devices, that may be the case. As I don't use it, I'm not sure if there would be a setting to shut out Mail.

As for the Mail preferences, you would need to open the Mail app. If you've never set it up, then that is most likely what is holding it up: it is trying to set itself up by establishing an account/connection with your ISP and integrate your icloud and gmail as well as download all the emails you've never downloaded. The OS has the Mail app enabled by default (integration!) and I do not know of another way to change that except to open the Mail app. Your ISP probably also is connected with the Mail app if it is listed there - you might want to check with them what email address/app they have on their records to use.

Hi babowa,

The General Pane of the Mail Preferences has the Option to set the App (or not). (I believe it is greyed out if there is not another Option (mine lists Outlook). ).

Messages has a similar one.

Firefox has one for the Browser side as it were.

(ergo it is likely you can set it in the preferred app if it is a separate app)

That said there does not appear to be an option to de-select it so that it does not start up.

Internet Accounts may list Mail as a potential option.

This AIM Screen Name could be used for emails and therefore added to Mail if I wished

The second blurred one is actually and @mac.com name used as a Valid AIM Screen Name (but Mail is not active there either).

Links on sites such as this are designed to open the listed mail app.

I am not sure if or how that might be made to go to a mail page/tab in a browser or if it can be how you select which service.

Hi,

I did also point out that another app may have the option to set the Default app...

... but that also seems to need another app.

I found this:

However, please be very careful when using this, for two reasons:

  1. If the person only has a web-based email account, and hasn't configured an email program on their computer (e.g. if you use Hotmail or Gmail instead of Microsoft Outlook) then it will open their email program for the first time and try to walk them through setting it up. This isn't a good idea if they're new to computers...
  2. There are now little programs called 'bots' which wander round the internet looking for email addresses to send spam (junk emails) to. If you don't want to receive them (and nobody does), then one part of the solution is not publishing your email address on the internet. So think long and hard before you use a mailto! A web-based form that they can fill out is more secure and works just as well. For details on how to do just that, visit this article on using webforms.

On this page http://www.htmlgoodies.com/primers/html/article.php/3478171

The second part does suggest Web page writers could use a webform that works on the site created rather than the mailto: option.

That does help solve the issue but does point to where it is.

I use Mail and found in the Preferences I could change the Default app to Firefox (yes I was astounded as well)

I then went to Firefox's help and looked at Applications.

I can't see anything similar in Safari.

I don't have Chrome so i can't comment but it seems it might be worth a look.
