I answered my own question as solved, but the problem returned, and I cannot un-mark it as solved. I needed to create this new unsolved discussion in order to attract the attention of Apple engineers.

Just upgraded to Sierra and latest update. I check the Activity Monitor frequently to check my usage of RAM. What I noted was Safari's usage go up and up and up, to the 5GB mark and I forced quit it. I tried the same thing over and over and came up with the same results, catching it just prior to freeze. I imported Chrome and have no problems AT ALL (yet, lol). Watch the Activity Monitor to see what is grabbing all your RAM.

What engineers? There isn't even a Mac OS dedicated group anymore, just a joint group where iOS gets most of the resources. Apple has some $150B in free cash and they can't afford to hire a couple dozen guys to work the Mac OS feature and bug list full time? No wonder the bug list continues to grow unabated. I don't know about the rest of your, but Yosemite was the last version that worked for me. As a 10+ year Mac owner who bought in because OS X "just worked", it makes me very sad to watch a once-great company being mis-managed into the ground.

I have a similar freezing problem immediately after upgrade to Sierra on a early 2015 15" MacBook Pro without sleep enabled. When it turns off the display, it hangs. I won't re-install El Capitan since in that version Spotlight is completely broken, and it also used to freeze intermittently for minutes at a time and then magically it would come back. I'm not sure if all of my apps will still work with Yosemite but I do have a backup so I think I'll give it a try. Better than waiting for Apple to "not fix" my problem.

Sigh.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Then, shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up. Compare how your Mac works in Safe Mode to how it has been.

Then, restart normally. If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.

Finally, you can temporarily create a new User Account, and log in to that account to determine if the problem also exists when logged in to that Account. To learn how to do that read How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. When you are finished troubleshooting, you can remove the temporary User Account by following these instructions: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group. Before removing it, confirm you don't need any of the files you might have created in that Account.

Let me know what you determine.

I had the same issue, late 2015 MacBook Pro 13". Using a Dell U2414H external monitor (and macbook as second monitor) with a USB mouse (SteelSeries Rival 300). Issue is the same is in the other thread, mouse locks up, and when using the touchpad the touchpad locks up but music (Spotify) keeps playing.

I did a complete reinstall (no backup, starting from MacOS Sierra and not Yosemite). I hope this solves the issue, if not it must be something with Sierra itself.

Same issue...

I believe it is the Logitech driver.

I have an Apple Cinema 27" Monitor with Logitech mouse. Everything has been fine with this combo and Sierra until yesterday. I had not installed the Logitech driver until yesterday...I decided to do it to test the added functionality. Only a few minutes into a reboot the system after the install that I experienced the same issues as all of you...multiple times.

I have since uninstalled the Logitech driver and so far (knock on wood) it has been stable.

Hi,

I have this problem too. If I connect the MBP to the Dell monitor without power in the MBP, then the screen freezes, hard reset is the only way to get round it. Plug the power in and get a blank screen on the MBP again only way round it is to hard reset.

Apple what are you doing about this, I need the use of dual screen but as of now it seems unusable.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Same here.

I've tried deleting old stuff, updating applications, removing extensions and startup items, disabling WebGL, not using Safari at all, not using certain applications, unmounting NAS drives (Synology, AFP and SMB), tried Safe Mode etc. The ONLY application other than Finder that I think has been running when it froze is iTunes (listening to music constantly). I've had it freeze previewing jpgs in the finder. It started with El Capitan but has escalated to a near unusable computer with Sierra. Beachball that almost instantly freezes in place, requiring a hard restart.

Some of the time iTunes dies first (the music stops playing just before the beachball), other times everything completely freezes but iTunes keeps playing only to stop when the song has reached the end.

Uninstalled the Logitech driver and things looked promising, but just had a new freeze. iMac 21,5", late 2013, 3,1 GHz, 16 GB RAM, MS Natural Keyboard 4000, Logitech MX Master (recently switched keyboard and mouse, but had freezes with the old MS Keyboard and the old Logitech). Again, started with El Capitan, nothing before that.

Seriously, this is getting way beyond disastrous.

Same problem. Complete freeze after sometimes after a few hours of use. The arrow still moves but can't click on anything. Cannot ssh in.

This is a clean install of Sierra. i.e. full hard drive erase followed by install.

I have a 2009 iMac and run an external apple Cinema Display.

The problem is solved by restarting without the external display.

Obviously this is not really a solution for me as I want to be able to use a 2nd monitor.
