Q: macOS Sierra keeps freezing (still)

I answered my own question as solved, but the problem returned, and I cannot un-mark it as solved. I needed to create this new unsolved discussion in order to attract the attention of Apple engineers.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12)

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Then, shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up. Compare how your Mac works in Safe Mode to how it has been.

Then, restart normally. If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.

Finally, you can temporarily create a new User Account, and log in to that account to determine if the problem also exists when logged in to that Account. To learn how to do that read How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. When you are finished troubleshooting, you can remove the temporary User Account by following these instructions: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group. Before removing it, confirm you don't need any of the files you might have created in that Account.

Let me know what you determine.

I had the same issue, late 2015 MacBook Pro 13". Using a Dell U2414H external monitor (and macbook as second monitor) with a USB mouse (SteelSeries Rival 300). Issue is the same is in the other thread, mouse locks up, and when using the touchpad the touchpad locks up but music (Spotify) keeps playing.

I did a complete reinstall (no backup, starting from MacOS Sierra and not Yosemite). I hope this solves the issue, if not it must be something with Sierra itself.

I've removed the Logitech Driver (don't know if you've installed it too) and it hasn't crashed since (it has been 5 days)

Sadly I don't have the "browse back" button on my mouse anymore.

    Hope it helps...

I have the same trouble and I'm using external display and Logitech mouse.

I'm going to uninstall the Logitech driver as well, and see what happens.

    Same issue...

I believe it is the Logitech driver.

I have an Apple Cinema 27" Monitor with Logitech mouse.  Everything has been fine with this combo and Sierra until yesterday.  I had not installed the Logitech driver until yesterday...I decided to do it to test the added functionality.  Only a few minutes into a reboot the system after the install that I experienced the same issues as all of you...multiple times.

I have since uninstalled the Logitech driver and so far (knock on wood) it has been stable.

    Hi,

I have this problem too. If I connect the MBP to the Dell monitor without power in the MBP, then the screen freezes, hard reset is the only way to get round it. Plug the power in and get a blank screen on the MBP again only way round it is to hard reset.

Apple what are you doing about this, I need the use of dual screen but as of now it seems unusable.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Same here.

I've tried deleting old stuff, updating applications, removing extensions and startup items, disabling WebGL, not using Safari at all, not using certain applications, unmounting NAS drives (Synology, AFP and SMB), tried Safe Mode etc. The ONLY application other than Finder that I think has been running when it froze is iTunes (listening to music constantly). I've had it freeze previewing jpgs in the finder. It started with El Capitan but has escalated to a near unusable computer with Sierra. Beachball that almost instantly freezes in place, requiring a hard restart.

Some of the time iTunes dies first (the music stops playing just before the beachball), other times everything completely freezes but iTunes keeps playing only to stop when the song has reached the end.

Uninstalled the Logitech driver and things looked promising, but just had a new freeze. iMac 21,5", late 2013, 3,1 GHz, 16 GB RAM, MS Natural Keyboard 4000, Logitech MX Master (recently switched keyboard and mouse, but had freezes with the old MS Keyboard and the old Logitech). Again, started with El Capitan, nothing before that.

Seriously, this is getting way beyond disastrous.

Same problem. Complete freeze after sometimes after a few hours of use. The arrow still moves but can't click on anything. Cannot ssh in.

This is a clean install of Sierra. i.e. full hard drive erase followed by install.

I have a 2009 iMac and run an external apple Cinema Display.

The problem is solved by restarting without the external display.

Obviously this is not really a solution for me as I want to be able to use a 2nd monitor.

Do you have Logitech utility installed? I have been troubleshooting this issue since my upgrade to macOS sierra. Since I uninstalled and removed the Logitech utility, I haven't had any freezes. Still use my Logitech mouse, just without the utility.

Going on more than a week without freezes when it would happen multiple times a week previously.

Having the exact same issues, looking on the Logitech forum, I think you might be onto something @brand1n0

Just uninstalled the logitech driver/Control center. We'll see if that changes anything.

I pinpointed my problem to the Logitech Control Center (LCC): https://community.logitech.com/s/question/0D53100005UytQy

They released an update last week and I have not had a problem since.

Though others may have similar problems caused by other things.

I have never had any Logitech software installed and I have the intermittent freezing problem.  So it must be wider than simply LCC.  This is really hard to diagnose since it only happens intermittently - maybe 2-3 times per day. So the whole, boot into safe mode and run in safemode all day long to see if it fixes the problem is really not a viable solution.  Save mode cuts out too many things that I need to actually do my work.

So I keep watching, waiting and hoping.

Yup. Ditto. No logitexh software. Just the intermittent freezes Requiring a hard restart. I thought it was because I had an   external monitor but just had another freeze with external monitor off.
