How does desktop & documents in iCloud work with multiple computers,e.g. iMac & MacBook Air

If I have an iMac and MacBook Air with different item on each desktop and different folders/files in Documents what will happen if I turn on desktop & Documents in iCloud? The best result would be that both desktops and both document folders end up separately in iCloud. I did not want to turn this on without some info on what the results would be.

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013), macOS Sierra (10.12)

When I enabled the iCloud Drive option for three of my Macs, the content of the three Desktops and Document folders were put in iCloud Drive into separate subfolders, that appeared on the new Desktop and Documents folder in iCloud.

The three folder were called "Old Desktop <computer name>".

The upload does not merge the Desktops and Document folders, but keeps them separate.

Since the documents on the three Macs are very redundant, I moved most of the files into a separate folder in my Home folder and left only a few documents in in Documents for the first upload. This way I can avoid to upload duplicates.
