Q: Chrome 53 + Realtek USB 3.0 Ethernet + OSX10.11.6 == Crash

My mid 2015 15" MBP (2.2GHz) running OSX 10.11.6 has been totally crashing, (screen freezes, mouse freezes, and touchpad "click" disappears) requiring a long press of the power button to force restart.

The issue appears to be caused by a USB 3.0 hub and Ethernet adapter that runs the Realtek drivers found here, interacting with Chrome 53.0.2785.116. If either Chrome is not running, or the Ethernet cable is not plugged into the hub/adapter (i.e. the USB hub alone is fine) everything runs without issue.

However, plugging the Ethernet cable in while Chrome is running either: A. causes the Ethernet to go undetected, or B. Crashes the Machine. While trying to open Chrome when the Ethernet is already connected just causes a crash. I have not experienced any issues with Safari.

Here are the last five panic reports and an output from EtreCheck in a Google Drive folder.

    It would be better if you posted the panic reports as in the body of a Reply.  No one really wants to download opaque files to their systems.  Nothing personal, but safety first.

    The same with the EtreCheck report. Please copy and paste the report into the body of a Reply

          Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

             com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(900.4.1)[FB980EB5-1F73-348E-9554-6F9F6FE481FD]@0xff ffff7f9f7eb000->0xffffff7f9f884fff

    You are panicing in the USB drivers.

    You have the following 3rd party kernel extensions installed and active at the time of the panic

    com.ni.driver.NiViPciK 15.0.0

    com.intel.kext.intelhaxm 6.0.3

    com.realtek.driver.AppleRTL815XEthernet 1.0.15

    com.realtek.driver.AppleRTL815XComposite 1.0.15

    com.ni.driver.nipalk 15.0.0

    Make sure that they are ALL El Capitan compatible.

    And since this is a USB related panic, start unplugging all the USB devices.  First one at a time.  Then in pairs.  If you are using a USB hub, remove it from the mix, and plug essential USB devices directly into the Mac.

    While you mention Chrome, it is a USB device that is causing the problem.  Chrome (aka Google) likes to use some experimental protocols that may exercise code paths other apps do not, and you may have stumbled across a bug in the drivers.

    Ya I'm actually getting rid of the NI drivers now. They're not officially supported and I don't use the hardware.

    The Realtek drivers claim to be compatible 10.6 through 10.11. They're also the ones that drive the USB Ethernet adapter I want to use, so if I get rid of them it doesn't solve my problem.

    Also, to be clear, the USB Ethernet adapter is the only device I'm connecting. It just happens to also be a 3 port usb hub, but I don't have any other devices plugged into it while this happens.

    It's probably also worth noting that the USB Ethernet device runs just fine along side Chrome on my old iMac running 10.10.

    Perhaps you should contact Realtek and point out that their driver is having difficulties with El Capitan when running Chrome.

    Or if it is only Chrome, then switch to Safari or Firefox (or SeaMonkey, or one of the other browsers available for the Mac).

    And remember that Chrome automatically updates, so what worked on 10.10 was a different Chrome than you have today.  Then again, a user mode application should NEVER cause a kernel panic. It is always the fault of the kernel bits, including 3rd party kernel extensions when there is a kernel panic (this is me speaking as a long time Unix kernel developer; other Fortune 100 companies, never for Apple)

    Can you use WiFi?

    Maybe you can get a USB or Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter that does NOT require 3rd party drivers.  I've got an Apple USB to Ethernet adapter on a Macbook Air that is working just fine without any extra kernel extensions needed.

    Ya I reached out to Realtek a few hours ago... we'll see what they say.

    I unfortunately can't switch from Chrome, I use / write too many Chrome Extensions that assist with web development. I'm writing Cordova apps these days so need I need a browser build on Webkit, and Safari's dev/debug tools just aren't as complete as on Chrome.

    I can definitely use WiFi, but I develop WiFi IoT devices so the 2.4GHz band gets real crowded and 5GHz doesn't play nice with our thick concrete walls at the office.

    Finally, I'm not much of Mac/Unix guy (having worked most of my life on Windows and Ubuntu), but I believe those Realtek drivers come preloaded with OSX... I installed them off the Realtek site when I first saw the USB device hub wasn't working. But for example on that old iMac running 10.10 it was just plug and play, no driver installation needed. Would that not suggest they're included with OSX? Could I have double installed something that is causing problems?

    Well try removing them, and see if your device still works.

    If there is an uninstaller that came with the drivers, that would be best, but if not, then

    Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder -> /Library/Extensions

    Okay, considerable improvement.

    I uninstalled the Realtek drivers, and manually picked through, deleted, and pkgutil forgot all of the National Instruments apps / drivers I had installed (which made me really appreciate uninstallers...), then rebooted.

    Now the USB Ethernet Device appears to be running okay with stock OSX drivers... BUT it still won't connect if Chrome is already open. To make it work I need to make sure Chrome is closed when I plug in the USB Ethernet, then I can open Chrome and browse (no crashes yet).

    Any thoughts on why that would be? Anyway, I can live with this until somebody patches something.

    If this is not being used for anything, you might as well remove it as well, and have zero 3rd party kernel extensions installed.

    As for why Chrome interferes with your Ethernet connections, I do not know.
