how do you isolate slow startup issues?

Startup takes around 6-8 minutes. iMac late 2013 8GB RAM (& over 200GB in HD space available)

Starting apps immediately following startup reflects similar sluggishness.

I know activity monitor and console are means to track issues, but on startup how is that possible? Especially when I can't even launch either of those apps with any speed?

a little help?

(oh, and I never hear the fans running. In fact, i've never heard the fans run on this machine. So, wouldn't that mean it's not a CPU or memory issue?)

thanks

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), 512 GB SSD

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Then, shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up. It's normal for a Mac to take a long time to start in Safe Mode, but if it's faster than what you have been experiencing it will be a helpful observation.

When your login screen eventually appears (or when your Desktop appears, if you enabled automatic login), log in and use your Mac in Safe Mode for a while to determine if it still takes a long time to launch apps.

Then, restart normally.

If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.

here are my etrecheck results. (although EC's designation of performance as "good" still belies the issue of a protracted startup)

(So I've also run Linc Davis' shell script if that would be more elucidating; I'm inserting in this post also an excerpt from his script results--see below Etrecheck.)

EtreCheck version: 3.0.6 (315)
