Q: This may be the wrong group but I was directed here - my question is how to reove malware from my MacBook Pro

My MacBook Pro 10.7.5 with Firefox 48.0.2 has just bee infected by search.friendlysocket.*** and I want to remove it. I've seen programs advertised which will do this but don't want to risk downloading from an unknown source. Any help or recommendations please

Thanks for that link. I'll hold back for a bit and if necessary try Avast as I've already downloaded it. But it is handy to know there is something specifically for pre 10.8 Macs.

I would like to discourage you from using Avast or any other third party AV software, but the final decision is yours.

    Ciao.

I am very reluctant to use it. I have downloaded it as I mentioned and let it run for just 2 minutes. However I have this wretched Support Friendly-Socket malware and I don't know how to get rid of it. If I can do that I would immediately get rid of Avast too. If no-one can tell me how to erase the malware manually I might just have to resort to Avast.

If it helps I have looked at the FireFox > tools > Add-ons but there is nothing with the name Friendly-Socket visible there.
