Older operating systems such as Mountain Lion, 10.8, Mavericks 10.9, Yosemite 10.10, or El Capitan v10.11 are no longer available from the App Store.
"It needs serious help now"
Bear in mind, upgrading to a new OS doesn't necessarily fix existing problems.

Sep 30, 2016 11:45 AM in response to Roxanne3249by Allan Eckert,I concur with Carolyn that upgrade is not the way to fix problems. It in fact usually makes them worst.
Instead i suggest, you download and install EtreCheck from http://etrecheck.com/
Run it and post the report here. Maybe we can help you to fix some of these problems so that you can safely upgrade the operating system.

Sep 30, 2016 3:12 PM in response to Roxanne3249by BobHarris,Mountain Lion Redemption code can still be obtained
<http://www.apple.com/shop/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion> ($20 US)
But it is no longer being supported
El Capitan can still be obtained
<https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206886>
But as Carolyn Samit says, a new OS may not fix existing problems, if they are caused by 3rd party additions or hardware that is either failing, or needs more resources for the OS or applications that are getting more resource hungry.
Follow Allan Eckert's suggestion and post the output from EtreCheck
