Q: Is Gutenprint 5.2.11compatible with OS Sierra?

I have a printer (a Canon CP200 photoprinter) which needs Gutenprint drivers when running OS X.

When I upgraded from Yosemite to El Capitan, my existing Gutenprint installation no longer worked and a fresh installation was not possible because El Capitan would not accept the installation package from Gutenprint.

Because of this, I was unable to use my CP200 until Gutenprint 5.1.11 was released and am anxious to avoid a repeat and so I am reluctant to install Sierra without some assurance that this problem will not be repeated.

Any advice will be appreciated.

fresh installation was not possible because El Capitan would not accept the installation package from Gutenprint.

What do you mean by that?  What happens when your launch the installer package and try to install it?  What messages do you get.  If you get message windows can you provide a screenshot of them?

In response to Old Toad's question, attempts to install the then current Gutenprint for OS X on my El Capitan installation simply produced the error message "The installer could not install the software because there is no software to install". This problem was later solved by the release of Gutenprint 5 .2 .11.

I have not been able to find any information on why the installation of El Capitan stopped the previous installation of Gutenprint from working. Attempts to print to the CP200 simply produced a message saying that a driver for the CP200 could not be found.

I was hoping that my question would produce a reply from a Gutenprint user who has already installed Sierra. Alternatively, some kind person using Sierra might try installing the latest version of Gutenprint for Mac to check whether it can be installed in Sierra. It can be found at http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php

My Epson Workforce 610 worked on MacOS Sierra 10.12 but stopped working with 10.12.1 beta 1, and beta 2 did not resolve the issue, so I've been unable to print. I just downloaded Gutenprint 5.2.11 and for the first time since installing 10.12.1 beta 1 (then beta 2), I am finally able to print again - w00t ! Of course, your mileage may vary. Good luck to you in any case.

Update: Installed MacOS Sierra 10.12.1 beta 3 today (10-4-16) and the inability to print issue I had with 10.12.1 beta 1 and 2 using the Epson driver (filter failed) has been resolved concerning my Epson Workforce 610 printer. It's still nice to have the Gutenprint 5.2.11 drivers as a backup though .

Following Don Parr's helpful responses, I went ahead and installed Sierra. However, when the installation was complete, I was horrified to see a message saying that Gutenprint is not compatible with Sierra.

But, given Don's experience, I reinstalled Gutenprint 5.2.11(exactly the same installer as that previously used for El Capitan). The installation went OK and I was able to print with my CP200 photo printer.

So question answered, Gutenprint is compatible with Sierra.

I asked the developers of Gutenprint and got this answer:

"We have received multiple reports that Gutenprint 5.2.11 works

correctly in Sierra.  Please make certain that you're running 5.2.11,

and not 5.2.11-pre1 (or earlier)."  Al least with my Kyocera it works fine !

Condaulm's reply matches my experience although I remain puzzled by the message from Sierra saying that my 5.2.11 Gutenprint is not compatible when a reinstall of 5.2.11 clearly worked OK for me. Perhaps I should have tried to print before reinstalling 5.2.11but it is too late now.

Unfortunately at this stage does not work for my Canon Pixma MP600R...

Used to work nicely (5.2.11) on El Capitan
