open second document in new tab in pages

There are times when I need to copy paragraphs from an older document and place in another. When I open the second document, it opens in a new window. Is there any way to open it in a new tab instead? Right now, when you click on the "new tab" button, you can only create a new document.

I was struggling with this and finally found this page Pages for Mac: Open an existing Pages document

"To have Pages documents (and all other documents) open in tabs, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Dock. Click the “Prefer tabs when opening documents” pop-up menu, then choose Always."
