why is itunes account services using so much data in iOS 10?

After iOS 10, my data has begun to disappear because of "system services". I've read the threads and have turned off all that I can turn off, while still leaving cellular data on for a handful of apps.

What has consumed 200mb in 24hrs is "itunes account services". But I have every cellular data option related to iTunes "off".

What to do?

iPhone 5s, iOS 10.0.2

I had this issue happen to me starting about three weeks ago.

Tried turning cell data off for everything, turned off Apple Music...
Kept happening, no matter what I tried. Ended up blowing about 600mb of data at this point.

The only thing that I could point to was that I had recently synced my itunes library which had some new music I had imported.

So yesterday, I went on my phone and looked at the albums that I had recently added, when I tapped on the red circle with three dots it showed an option to "DOWNLOAD"

This made no sense, since the files should already be on there from being synched, right?

So I've gone and hit download for each of the latest songs, and am waiting for my data reset period to test as because of this bug I've already blown through half my data in only 5 days, and dont want to go over my limit if it doesnt work.

You may want to try this and see if that fixes the issue.

That's interesting. Perhaps the handling of downloaded music is not correct/there is an issue.

I had about 40GB offline music.

But in the last Weeks i started to clean up the "downloaded songs". Finally i got 38 GB offline but that was much - too much. So i done a reset of my iPhone and now there is much more free space and downloaded music is "just" 30GB.

What i want to say: i am not sure but it seems to me that there were more downloaded songs on my iPhone before but i couldnt clean up them correctly.

my suggestion didn't work.

I ended up calling apple, spoke with a tech support person who did some remote thing with my phone, said some things came up, and that I needed to restore my phone.

So i went through all the trouble of doing a complete wipe and clean of my phone, and put a small amount of music back on...and the problem still happened. 100mb of itunes account data.

So I removed all the songs from my library...nothing on the phone.

And just now I looked and saw 34mb of itunes account data usage under cellular...

So now I've basically turned cellular data off and now have very expensive phone that I can only use for making calls unless i have wifi...

fyi, the latest iOS update/iTunes update does not fix it....

Very frustrating.

Hi, 23jeg!

Thanks for reaching out via the Apple Support Communities! From your post, I'm understanding that you have some concerns over cellular data usage for System Services, particularly those in relation to the iTunes Account Services. I know managing your cellular data usage is important, and I'd be happy to help!

I see you have turned off some settings allowing the iTunes Store to access cellular data, but are still getting some usage through. I just want to make sure that you have all features that could be using iTunes Account Services disabled, as some may not be obvious. Please check that all of the following are turned off under Settings > Cellular: App Store, iBooks, iTunes Store, and Music. Also, make sure Wi-Fi Assist is turned off as well; if it is on, certain apps may use cellular data when your Wi-Fi connectivity is unreliable. You can get more information on Wi-Fi Assist here: About Wi-Fi Assist

I would also encourage you to make sure that the Use Cellular Data option is disabled under Settings > iTunes & App Stores

Once you have turned all of those features off, use your iPhone for at least 24 hours, then check for additional data being used for iTunes Account Services.

Cheers!

Thank you for your considerate reply.

Unfortunately, I had done each and every one of the things that you suggest some days ago. I also made sure that iCloud data was turned off, as well as any data usage associated with Apple Music, which I am subscribed to. What dropped significantly was "iTunes Media Services" data usage. However, "iTunes Account Services" continued to consume cellular data - 152mb in two days.

I have diligently scoured every single option in "Settings", looking for a "cellular usage" option that was being left open, and I can't find any.

All I know is that before iOS 10, I used less than 1GB of data a month, because I'm almost always in Wi-Fi areas. After iOS 10 I burned through that in a week. At the moment I've just turned off my cellular data altogether until I can see if there's a reasonable solution to this.

If you or anyone else has any ideas or experiences I would appreciate it.

Many thanks

Me: 1,2 GB data consumption itunes-account this month.

But this is what i use: AppleMusic (use mobile=on), iTunes and iBook turned on (mobile).

Who is to blame: (myself, because i turned all mobile options on :-/ ) - but it would be great to know the real cause: Perhaps its "your personal music mix" which updates every friday (25 Songs=about 250 mb)...

The bad thing i dont know the cause exactly....

"itunes-account" is a very poor description....

Very bad.

Today is Friday. And so i had a look into my mobile data consumption.

iTunes Account: 10 MB

Then i started my music app and switched to "My New Music Mix". After a second the list gets updated with new songs and the MusicApp began to download all songs.

While this procedure the amount in "iTunes Account" was raising.

The "mobile data consumption" of the app "Music" not changed.

After all songs where downloaded i got about 260MB mobile data traffic in "iTunes Account".

Conclusion: Downloaded music in music app is not showing in "mobile data, music app".

It affects the "iTunes Account Services"
