Q: Using iCloud Drive to Store Important Files

I lease 50GB from Apple.  I use the iCloud Drive as my main storage area for all of my documents.  I do this as a safety measure.  A portable disk drive can fail.  A fire can destroy it and/or my computer.  Is there a way to periodically move updated photos to the iCloud Drive automatically?

Sure. On a Mac, tap System Preferences > iCloud and make sure there is a check mark next to Photos.

On an iPhone, iPad or iPod, tap Settings > iCloud and turn the Photos switch on.

But isn't there a difference between the iCloud Drive and iCloud sharing?

There is no such feature as iCloud Sharing.

Photos have their own iCloud "feature" called iCloud Photo Library. This is different from iCloud Drive entirely.

In iCloud Photos, there is a separate feature called Photo Sharing.

Fantastic!  Thanks for your help.  Can I assume that if my Mac burned up my photos would survive in the cloud somewhere?

Bit of a dark question, but, yes.

I would fully expect Apple to have multiple redundancies in their iCloud network.

I would advocate a local USB drive backup for immediacy and capacity, plus cloud based storage for disaster recovery. The cloud is great, but can be slow for large amounts of data.

Yes.  I was in IT for more than 35 years.  All of the data centers that we supported had backups.  I called Apple about the space I lease on iCloud Drive and that is backed up too.  Thanks.  The knowledge of people like you on this board never ceases to impress me.  Not just with their insights but with their willingness to share.  Thanks again.

    Well, thank you for that.

    Much appreciated.
