Q: installing macOS Sierra makes MacBook Pro fan run constantly

Ever since I upgraded to macOS Sierra, the fan in my MacBook Pro runs constantly. Time Machine seems to be running constantly via a wifi connection to the USB drive plugged into my AirPort Extreme Base Station. Time Machine constantly reports "preparing backup" and the backups seem to be getting done. At first I thought that once the first post-update backup was completed, the heavy lifting would be done and things would go back to normal. However, several days later, the fan still runs ... even when the laptop is closed (because the backups run even when the machine is asleep). Any advice on cooling things down?

Uninstall Sophos. It is a worthless scam on a Mac. It offers nothing useful. All it does is use system resources and cause problems.

It also appears your Mac is having problems with Time Machine. As a test try disabling Time Machine and see if it has an impact on your Mac.

any clues as to why Sophos might be the cause? would a newer version of the software avoid the problem?

No. You do not need any AV software on your Mac. Uninstall it.

No a newer version would not solve the issue. Do not use any third party app that claims to protect. clean, manage, boost performance etc.
