Q: changing setting from keep forever to 1 year

Hi I currently have my setting for my iMessages App to keep messages Forever. Why I thought this was a good idea is beyond me. Is there a way to keep messages I want (I am willing to go through and delete threads that I don't want) and change the setting to 1 year or 30 days without deleting these messages I want?

iPhone 6s, iOS 10.0.2

The only way to keep something that would meet the specifications to delete is if you were to archive them on the computer with a 3rd party app. If you were to change the settings in Messages to 30 days, then only messages on the device less than 30 days old would stay, no matter what. You are probably better of just manually deleting the messages that you no longer want on the device manually. I have mine set to Forever, but then I purge messages I no longer need, so anything I really want to save it going to be saved, and I've deleted what I don't want.
