    howdy blumirage2,

It sounds like you are trying to use the Emoji keyboard but it is not working for some reason. First I would make sure that the emoji keyboard is still listed in Settings > General > Keyboards > Keyboards. If you need to add it, tap Edit in the upper right corner.

If the keyboard is there to use in the Messages app, then quit Messages:

Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Then restart the phone and test it out again.

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If I understood the issue incorrectly let me know with some more info about what exactly is not working when you try use emoji. Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

GO into the imessage app> tap any thread>tap in the message bar>press and hold the globe on the keyboard > select emoji

This is clearly one of the keyboard issues w/ios 10.0.2 too.

A number of my keyboard functions suddenly stopped working this morning:

    Emoji

    Bitmoji

My preferred keyboard is set to AZERTY but so far as I can tell shifted back to QWERTY in mail & browsers (not sure where else yet) and does not allow use of azerty

Keyboard keys become slow or unresponsive.

iTranslate error message above keyboard says "iTranslate requires full access." even though my settings show that iTranslate does have full access.

    Autocorrect and Autocomplete not functioning.

    This is wildly aggravating!!!

So i chatted with apple yesterday about the keyboard issues associated woth the 10.0.2 update- first, sorry about lack of capitalizations, grammatical omissions and text errors given my keybord is not working properly.

In addition to the issues i noted above- and while in chat with the apple tech- my messages were duplicating mutiple times, the backspace key only works one character at a time (vs holding down for repeat deletions), it often requires multiple presses of a key to get it to perform the action, esp. with shift key, the hold amd swipe fnction to say enter a number and have the keyboard automatically return to letters does not work, not all keyboard characters are availble (ie, the emdash, or long dash), and my keyboard shortcuts aren't functioning at all. I was told by Emily the apple tech that perhaps my keyboard hadn't uploaded completely when i updated my ios. Then she asked about my having a screen protector or case on my phone saying they might be interfering with my keyboard functionality. Except that my keyboard was functioning just fine with screen protector and case long before the update. so she told me to reset all my settings (but DO NOT ERASE ALL CONTENT) via Settings--> General-->Reset-->Reset all settings (again do NOT choose the option to erase all content and reset settings) -- also you will need to reset your passcode, fingerprints for touchcode, and cards in your wallet at very least when doing this.

In the middle of performing this action my phone crashed and restarted and everything seemed to be working again...until this morning. Now we are back to all the issues i listed now and yesterday. >!<
