Oct 1, 2016 12:48 AM in response to hjdollar1by K Shaffer,Have you tried to restart in safe mode (shift key held on startup) until or if you can
get a window to login; then you may be able to use the computer to troubleshoot.

There may be damages to your computers hard drive, so some files or user account
could fail to appear correctly; depending on age and wear, a hard drive failure may
be expected at some point in the life of a computer. They can be replaced; but you
should have a backup of your running computer content -and- your files, outside of
the computer in externally enclosed hard drive. Also, Time Machine backups, as well.

Depending on the macOS (or OS X) version running on the computer, and its vintage

and other options from a menu that would load from that startup method.

if you simply had a regular Admin account or standard account password issue.

And if you upgraded to a new macOS Sierra or other new to your Mac system, the
applications you had been using may not be supported or you may not have set up
the upgrade properly. Hard to say what you had been doing. OR what exact model
Mac you have there and what macOS X was involved before an update or upgrade.
In any event...
Good luck!
