mail constantly "sending" mails

On my Macbook, in mail, at the bottom of the mailboxes column the message "sending x mails out of y messages" constantly appears. (it seems to be that x is normally y-3. e.g. at the moment 42 out of 45).

I am on 10.11.6 El Capitan.

Is this significant to anything please? Battery life? Security?

Or do I "upgrade' to Sierra and hope!?

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks

Bill

If I knew what mails were being sent I would not have to ask! At the moment it is saying "sending 46 of 49 messages".

There is nothing in the outbox.

I am the only user of the computer.

Two are map one is exchange.

I am not sure why you more the question to Yosemite as I am on El Capitan.

If anyone could offer positive advice I would be grateful.

(At the same time whats does "connection logging enabled" mean please? And do I want in enabled!!!
