iPhone 7 Plus Camera - Pictures are bad

I take the following picture with my new iPhone 7 Plus (only one example).

So as you can see, this is really crap.

What is the problem? Is it a Hardware of Software (10.0.2) issue?

The results of my old iPhone 6s Plus were better...

I sometimes look at past photos taken with iphone 4S, 5S and 6S. Those pictures look nice, good color reproduction, good details. Why do you think Apple sid not show any landscape and colorfull photos in their iphone 7 keynote, like they used to with older models?? They knew that color reproduction is horrible, oil painted and details are crap.

I do not expect a perfect phone, but seriously, I do expect a decent camera!

I exchanged my 6s for 7 and I got it from someone who bought it 2 weeks earlier. So i got almost a brand new iPhone 7 that was never restored or reset before. What is up is the question for the apple engineers. But until then I am happy with what I got and it works for some of you, which is great because I know the frustration with the quality of the photos.

Try again. It won't hurt, you never know...

Finally, I know what's the problem and got the problem totally solved!

There is a great difference when you view the photo using windows default photo browser and professional photo browser like Photoshop CS and Lightroom.

I use Photoshop CS to view the photo taken by my iPhone 7 plus and the image quality is totally different, all details came back and the color tone is accurate!

The reason behind is that starting from iPhone 7, Apple use DCI-P3 instead of sRGB to enable wider color range. You have to use hardware / software capable of 'decoding' DCI-P3 'format' in order to show the image in true color.

Disclaimer: I am not an expert and therefore I just write as much as I know and please correct me if there is anything wrong as mentioned above.

I have a similar issue with my iphone 7 plus. Skin looks awfully smeary no mater whether the picture has been taken with good light during day or in dark. Both lenses aswell as the front camera do the same so it must be a software thing... It's so ugly. I preferred the images off the iphone 5. Those big "shot on iphone" posters apple puts everywhere can not have been taken with the phone. It's the biggest lie.

I doubt they will do something about it as there are too little people complaining.

Yes, you are right that only hardware can reproduce the wider color profile. Yet, i think using photoshop can somehow decode the DCI P3 to viewable sRGB on the monitor to reproduce the actual color. You can try to use 'Change to Profile' in photoshop to change the profile to sRGB and save as jpg, afterwards, the color will become accurate using any browsers including Windows default one. I tried that and it works!

I have this issue too, so I called to apple care and opened a case... Its been like 4 weeks, they asked me for pictures and did remote diagnostics, and after all that time they told me the camera is ok it doesnt have technical issues and its a perspective thing and they dont see anything wrong in the pictures... so i am crazy and it was a waste of time... please call to apple care and open a case so they at least know some users are aware that their new phone with two cameras is disappointing

Just wanted to add my thoughts on this problem.

I picked up a 7 Plus in September and returned it 3 days later. I must have had a dud unit as the images produced by it were awful. I returned it as I just did not want to go through the process of proving it to Apple for a warranty claim.

Here is a small album of photos compared to my Nexus 6P

https://imgur.com/a/f3OSq

The photo of the Guinea Pig is the wrong colour, the hay and cage is the wrong colour, his fur is blurry and blotchy. The image is full of digital noise.

Same for the photo of the Ford engine, wrong colour and blurry in parts. Whole image looks soft.

Disregarding DCI P3 / SRGB, the images produced by the 7 Plus are worse than would could be produced by my old iPhone 6 Plus with its 8MP sensor.

It's not a huge issue for me anymore as I pitched the phone but wanted to confirm for others that yes this problem exists.
