iPhone 7 Plus Camera - Pictures are bad

I take the following picture with my new iPhone 7 Plus (only one example).

So as you can see, this is really crap.

What is the problem? Is it a Hardware of Software (10.0.2) issue?

The results of my old iPhone 6s Plus were better...

I sometimes look at past photos taken with iphone 4S, 5S and 6S. Those pictures look nice, good color reproduction, good details. Why do you think Apple sid not show any landscape and colorfull photos in their iphone 7 keynote, like they used to with older models?? They knew that color reproduction is horrible, oil painted and details are crap.

I do not expect a perfect phone, but seriously, I do expect a decent camera!

Here are some pictures taken of the same scene using a iphone 6 plus, 6s plus and my 7 plus.

iP6sP : http://www.image-share.com/ijpg-3376-296.html

iP7P : http://www.image-share.com/ijpg-3376-297.html

These were taken indoors. No zoom, no editing or color adjustments. Taken using the default camera app. Notice the color saturation differences.

Here's a cropped at 100% comparison image between the ip6 plus and ip7 plus versions.

I don't know what to say. Some says its a non-issue, some report this is not wide spread, some of us (including me) thinks its in all the ip7.

I agree pictures are terrible. I've been trying to figure out why and under what conditions. I think low light amplifies the issue but agree it is there all the time. Here is a shot I took why recording video in "HD 1080p" on my iP7+. Don't know why it's upside down either....anyway have a look. Garbage. Looks like we dropped back to good ol' 2007 - with an added retro painting effect. Good job apple, now fix it!

They do the same in Munich- on phone aswell as at the Apple shop. It makes me furious that they are either so dull to not see the watercolor effect or even worse that they pretend to see nothing. How can you argue with someone who keeps saying there's nothing there.

It did find a way around it using the Adobe Lightroom App which is a lot more cumbersome than the iPhone camera app, but it does make a big difference.

In iPhone Camera Settings - set to "Keep originals". (Not optimize for storage).

In Lightroom App- set the foto quality to DNG.

Obviously this only works for Lightroom users. I tried it with the camera+ App (highest quality) and had the same ugly results as with the apple camera app.

The pics taken in the Lightroom App have a nice fine grain rather than blotchy smeary colors- especially with skin tones.

I can't believe those big "shot on iPhone" posters are really shot using an iPhone.

Exactly. They pretend like there's nothing wrong although you can see it in their eyes that they know. Even though I emailed photos taken with both my 7 plus and my almost 2.X years old iPhone showing them how much it lacks detail and how severely handicapped the autofocus system is, they keep referring back to their precious diagnostic test and keep telling me that nothing is wrong but guess what. That diagnostic test just made apple lose a lifetime value from me. I lost trust with Apple products after my interactions regarding this issue. Apple used to brag about how performance in their ads and are real and not rendered, but now it seems like quality control is all over the place with them rolling out defected units. I wouldn't have complained as much if they didn't advertise the camera so much and the screen being 25% brighter (mine is also yellow and dull and yes, night shift is off.)

I'm so glad this thread is here, I find the camera to be utterly dreadful, a £700 phone with supposedly a great camera and it's much worst then my 6S was, I am think of ditching my 7 for a 6S, iOS 10 seems very buggy in general too.

I want to use my phone to take photos of my spaniel who is black and white and the phone is utterly utterly utterly hopeless at getting the colour and exposure right with his white fur, and that includes outside in daylight but not string sunshine.

Apple has to fix this issue! I tried every single way- they wanted me to try "reset to factory settings, set up as new device, and without using a backup from iCloud or from mac, they told me to try the camera and remove the phone case". I'm very tired of trying all of this! with no luck. I didn't pay for getting the worst camera ever., I had an IPhone 6s plus before and the camera is really a lot better on the 6s plus! I will go to apple store tomorrow to find out if there is any diffrence between my phone and their phone in store. I don't think it is software or uppdate problem. When i called the apple support, they acted like they'd never heard about the issue on iPhone 7 plus camera... but i'm pretty sure that I wasn't the first one call them and bringing this issue up. Apple should start responding about the problem. User uploaded file

That is really bad. I'm surprised at how long this issue keeps going without any fix from Apple. I commented very early in this thread that I noticed the poor quality images when I was playing around with the iPhone 7, fully anticipating to be wow'd and to (finally!) upgrade from my iPhone 5S. But instead, something wasn't right and I decided to hold back, only to find this thread a few weeks later.

At this point, I don't know if the problem is hardware or software. My fear is that it's hardware and Apple won't be able to do anything about it without a lot of bad publicity.

BTW, I also notice this on my 9.7" iPad Pro. The water-color effect when you zoom in. And sometimes noticeable without zooming in. Just atrocious.

It is more important to me to have a proper-functioning smartphone camera than staying loyal to Apple. I am going to give Apple time to fix this, but I will sadly leap to the dark side sometime in 2017 if Apple doesn't fix this. I really hope that doesn't have to happen.

The iPad Pro 9.7" has the exact same camera module as the iPhone 6S Plus, so it would suggest this to be a software issue which really isn't all that surprising when you see how many bugs iOS has these days. I should have never changed my iPhone 6S and iOS 9! I may see if I can find a cheap Galaxy Note 5 as I had one before and its camera is fine. Ditch the iPhone for good. from what I understand no one is beta testing new camera fixes either. Does Apple even care?
