Ive managed to get locked out of my phone. Does anyone know if it is possible just to put another sim in and and forget about the previous sim?

Do you mean you've forgotten your screen lock passcode? Is the device disabled? If so, the SIM has nothing at all to do with the device security or accessing it. Swapping the SIM card will not affect accessing the phone one way or another.
What do you mean by locked out?
Passcode? Activation lock?
Neither are associated with a SIM card in any way.
