I have a macbook pro 13inch retina screen. OS X El Capitan very 10.11.6
As I type in text, the cursor occasionally relocates itself unexpectedly to random places on the page.
Any ideas why and how to prevent this from happening?

Some users have seen success by changing preferences to ignore stray input from the trackpad.
Others have been forced to put the computer on a lower surface to get their hands up and away from the trackpad while typing.
Still others needed to have their trackpad replaced.
Another more sinister problem is that a swelling battery can cause the trackpad to act erratically. You can't check that yourself on your model unless you can see that the case is deforming---you will need to have Apple look at it if Grant's first two options do not resolve this.
