Q: mail won't print embedded graphics?

Running 10.12 of sierra.  I have an email that uses a graphic as it's message, i've had these a thousand times before, I can print them as I see them.  Now it shows up as a blank page with a header only in print preview and that's exactly what I get.  Tried saving the email as a PDF... get the same thing a header with nothing else.  I haven't changed any settings but I have applied the recent update.

Basically what I see I do not get if I try to print it.  Since the mail app uses the preview app to preview such things, it could very well be preview that is to blame.  I can use grab and get a screen capture of it, but that's a lot of work that I never had to do before.

What gives?

I'm bumping my own post because this is a clearly an issue.  Raw source says it's an XHTML 1.0 embedded document.  I can see it in mail, I just can't print it or save it as a pdf document as the only thing that is visible it the mail headers and that's it.
