Q: Old Airport Express cannot see new wireless router

Summary:  Old Airport Express, connected via ethernet cable,  cannot see any wireless network during setup in airport utility 5.6. I want to change it from the old wireless router to the new to stream airtunes.

Hello:  I have an old Airport Express (AE). It is the kind that requires airport utility 5.6.  I have a copy of  airport utility 5.6.1 for my current laptop.

I just replaced wireless cable modem router, so I need to tell the AE what network to be on and what password.  I connect AE via ethernet cable.  I do hard reset on AE.  I run airport utility. In airport utility, I select option to join network so it can stream airtunes. Everything is fine in setup  until "Choose the wireless network you would like your airport to use...".   Regardless of the network security I use, no matter how many times I click on the menu, it won't see any of the several wirelss networks in my area, including the wirelss router it is near.  This is a netgear C6250-100NAS.

How do I get the AE to see my wireless network ?  It cannot be a problem with interference, because the AE can't see ANY wireless networks.

The netgear is a cable modem wireless router running 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks with security option "WPA2-PSK [AES]" which I take to be WPA2-personal in menu selection on the setup assistant.

ANy help much appreciated.  Stupid to put this in landfill just because it isn't well supported by apple (who is supposed to have an environmental commitment).
