Q: speech to text no longer works

I did the iOS upgrade on 9/30/16, now the little microphone to use speech to text feature is no longer available.  I do not want to send an audio recording of my voice.  I want to send text messages, by speaking my message into the microphone and have it translated to text.  People cannot always "listen" to audio recordings, that's why we use text messages.  Please restore speech to text for text messaging.  Thanks!

    Hi Sspribyl,

I see from your post that you're having trouble using the Dictation feature in Messages. I'd like to help you get this working again!

Based on your description of the issue, it sounds like you are getting the icon to send an audio message mixed up with the icon to start dictating a message. Take a look at the following information that goes over how to enable and use Dictation on your iPhone:

    Dictate

You can dictate instead of typing. Make sure Enable Dictation is turned on (in Settings > General > Keyboard) and iPhone is connected to the Internet.

Note: Dictation may not be available in all languages or in all areas, and features may vary. Cellular data charges may apply. See Cellular data settings.

Dictate text. Tap the Siri button on the onscreen keyboard or Search field, then speak. Tap Done when you finish.

Email message being composed. Cursor shows where dictated text will be placed. The dictation key appears on the keyboard, just to the left of the space bar

Add text. Tap the Siri button again and continue dictating. To insert text, tap to place the insertion point first. You can also replace selected text by dictating.

    All the best!
