Q: MacBook Pro experiencing repeated kernel panics

Hi

I have been experiencing repeated kernel panics on my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014). Typically, a piece of software will 'quit unexpectedly' a couple of times (Safari Web Content, Mail, Finder). Then randomly the system will completely freeze for two seconds and restart.

I have tried running the system in Safe Mode, but still experienced kernel panics. I then erased the hard driver and reinstalled the El Capitan afresh (and subsequently upgrading to Sierra). I have continued to experience these error messages and kernel panics, which I can only assume means I have a hardware issue.

I am taking the device to a Genius Bar next week, but in the meantime wondered whether anyone could look over panic report and spot a possible cause? I've never added or changed any of the hardware - the MacBook is exactly as it was when I purchased it.

You appear to be running unmodified Mac OS (no third-party kernel extensions added). Mac OS does not crash in this fashion. You should pay attention to this statement from the crash report:

    Paul Reitz-

Yours is not "In that fashion". Yours is a GPU panic. Depending on what Hardware you are running, you may need your graphics chip replaced. NVIDIA Graphics likely means MacBook Pro. Is this the MacBook Pro 6,2 2010 model?

    Grant,

I interpreted 'in that fashion' to refer to the condition of lattwood's hw/sw, meaning stock Apple.  But many thanks for your insight; it helps to know what to search for, and plenty was to be found.

Since black screens began I recall having seen GPU panic several times, along with others.   If at least this one cause can be mitigated following Linc Davis' suggestion, that's what I'll do.

    Thanks again!

    Follow up...

Linc's suggestion points to Apple's instruction to force constant use of the NVidia chip.  That eliminates switching, but if the chip issue is in other circuitry, it might result in more GPU panics, in addition to significantly reducing battery run time.   I did not find any commentary that limits the issue to switching, so I may give gfxCardStatus a try, to force use of only the integrated graphics chip.

The tone of past discussions has been that the chips were shipped with an internal fault, but my experience, and that of others, has been that the issue began much later.   That indicates an ongoing degradation mechanism within the chip, which probably means that the fault may eventually occur in every one.  Keeping the machine as cool as possible could slow the degradation.

It has been reported that Cinebench can reveal the fault, which I intend to test, and report back.

The original documents refers to a Latent Defect (that was there from when the machines were built)  that is exposed more and more by later and later versions of MacOS, and eventually, by the VST test. This follows what we see on the forums -- that Users may have been happy for a long time on their original Mac OS version, but as they installed later versions, they encountered the problems more frequently.

Some users have suggested soldering problems, but the only real solution seems to be to completely replace (not just re-solder or bake) the Graphics chip.

One user in about the last month made a new claim that you could make changes in AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext that would stabilize the power during transitions. It used slightly more power steady-state, but was working for him and not wrecking battery performance.

Cinebench does reliably produce the GPU panic.   Word of advice: don't double-click the Cinebench app; open the package and dig for the MacOS executable.  Otherwise it gives an error message and will not run.s

    Grant,

I did a quick run-through of that process, enough to know my situation is different - no intent to go back to an old OS.  So I may study it more to see if it holds out hope under Sierra.

What's your take on the notion this is actually a failing tantalum cap on the motherboard... or did I misinterpret that post (too)?   Having seen the 27-layer SMT boards used in our company's products, I'm not keen in getting the equipment to do a workmanlike repair.  But a friend has the equipment and skills, so if it's an actual fix, I'd do the R&R; should make his a 5 minute job.

Apple issued a large service advisory and replaced motherboards in a span of four years (now expired).

In my opinion, the fundamental problem was caused by Latent Defect in the graphics chips used for a certain period of time, and fixed in the ones used later in the process.

In any given board, there may be other issues as well. I have not seen the mention of bad capacitors in this context, and I do not believe that is the fundamental problem. Due to lack of supporting evidences, I would not solder new caps on my motherboard based on such an anecdote.

Did you see my post above citing a thread on macrumors forum, and the post by fabioroberto about a software work-around to change settings in AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext ? Even if he only applied it to an older version, it may be worth trying in a later version as well. [Or did he already fail at that and I missed it?]

    Grant,

Yes, I saw that and am considering it, but it was so circuitous (pun intended) that I first wanted your input on cap replacement.  Don't recall mention of trying newer OS.

From your knowledge, does the defect occur only when switching between chips, or does it also occur in continuous operation of the NVidia GPU?

Curious whether mine was ever covered by the program, or whether later shipments still had some kind of defect.  This 15" MPB core I7 was re-manufactured, has been in nearly constant use for 5 yrs, but had no problems until earlier this year.   I've seen manufacturers' errata sheets for complex chips, and know first-hand what's considered acceptable proof of a fix by a sustaining org eager to put the matter to rest.  "Declare victory, and move on"...

Thanks again for your kind help!

does the defect occur only when switching between chips,

Yes, exactly. The Video Switching Test (VST) that they run at the genius bar runs for as long as 15 minutes if it does not detect a problem.  The rules at the time were: It must have been be built in a certain time period, (and not later) and it must be working well enough to run and FAIL the VST test. (Completely dead MacBooks were not eligible.)

Perhaps yours is suffering from a different problem. Your appointment at the genius bar for an evaluation is free, regardless of your warranty status.  You could get them to run it on yours as well, even through they will protest that "we can't get parts anymore, and the free program expired."

I'm having this exact issue with constant GPU panics after upgrading to OS Sierra on my 2012 Retina Pro! I had the Logic Board replaced this week and I'm still experiencing issues. Apple Hardware Test is showing everything is OK. So it definitely seems driver/software related to me. I'll try the PowerManagement fix posted above. I've had better results using the NVIDIA beta driver however it still gives me the black kernel panic screen
