Q: How do I get my iOS9 backup to stick? 'Restore backup' automatically updates to iOS10 again without asking me first.

Title says it all. I HATE iOS10 and have a backup of iOS9 in iTunes from right before the update, but every time I try to 'restore from backup' it automatically updates again back to 10 without asking me.

Please help. 10 is a total disaster on my iPhone 5s; endless crashing and overheating. I just want my phone to work again... and to dump iOS10 like a bad date.

Latest version of iTunes is running. OS 10.9.5 on a Macbook Pro.

Macbook Pro 2.2gig Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.5)

Sorry but you cannot revert back to 9. It is not an option. I have two iPhone fives on iOS 10.0.2 with no issues. Yours should not be crashing or overheating. I suspect a corrupted app which returns with the restore from backup. May want to try a restore as new to test.

Restoring from a back up restores the latest operating system and your back-up data. Your back up doesn't contain iOS 9.

Like elcpu, I've been running iOS 10 since it was release with no issues on my iPhone 6. I agree that you should restore the phone as new and test it with only stock apps. If it works properly, then you'll need to begin to figure out what apps are causing the problem. If you want to see if you can put off restoring your phone, start by going to the App Store and making sure that all of your app updates have been downloaded to the phone. Delete any apps you don't really use.

Thanks for the help. Yeah, not happy at all with this forced change, and I know a ton of other people having crash problems, so... consider yourself lucky.

I did find a way to download/restore iOS9.3.5 via a Google search, which I can then restore my iOS9.3.5 backup to, so I'll go that route. It will be a pain in the *** to do, but what choice do I have?

Not pleased at all that Apple forces me to use what I don't want to on my $800 phone. I also HATE the changes in iOS10 and definitely won't be continuing with Apple after this phone. I've been a steady Apple customer since 1996, have spent over $20,000 on their products. I'm done.

Well, apparently it IS an option, because a Google search just taught me an apparent work-around. Sorry that Apple can't be of any help.

For those wondering, and those who are also sick and tired of Apple's control-freaky ways about what we do with our bought and paid for $800++ devices, this fix involves downloading a fresh copy of iOS9.3.5, wiping your iPhone, then installing the fresh copy of 9.3.5, then restoring your pre-iOS10 backup. (I get that iOS9 itself isn't actually a part of the backup). Hope it works. I'll have to read more before I actually do it; there might be other details I left out about how to fix this.

You can only do that for as long as Apple keep signing iOS 9.x. You also don't know anything about the version your downloading. You're likely to be doing more harm than good.

The version came from Apple's servers (via a third party link), so I would expect that part is not a problem. That said, it may not be a good move. I'll need to spend/waste even more time tonight researching this totally-unnecessary problem. Thank you for your input.

Can you explain a bit what 'signing' is? And why Apple stops it? I really really just want my 9.3.5 back...

    So they've told you....

When you restore your phone, it contacts the Apple servers to verify the update. After a certain point, Apple will stop verifying older versions of the software except for devices that can't support a higher version. There is, for example a version if iOS 7 that's still signed if you're using an iPhone 4 and a version of iOS 5 for the original iPad. I don't know if Apple has stopped signing iOS 9.3.5 for devices that support iOS 10 but, if they haven't, they will.

    Well, thank you.

And goodbye, Apple. It's been a great 20 years, but I'm done with this. Time for an Android I guess.

"Threat"? Saying goodbye isn't a threat. Do you feel "threatened" by my dissatisfaction? Don't be frightened, friend. In the real world it's okay for customers to complain.

Thanks for your very important contribution to the discussion.

"time for an android I guess" seems a threat for someone to hear.

Complain away. In fact, I gave you the correct link to offer your feedback/complain to. So, yeah, it's OK to complain.

Simply pointing out your anger is misdirected here. In this community. Where Apple doesn't actively participate.

You should always chose the tool that best meets your needs. Be aware of the fact that the Android OS is even less like iOS 9.3.5 than iOS 10.
