Q: Airport in bridge mode losing packets

Hi all.

I have a brand new airport extreme, with firmware version 7.7.7 (latest at the time of this posting). My ISP modem settings are blocked, and it is already set to do routing/DHCP/Nat, therefore I am using my airport extreme in bridge mode to avoid double NAT (it connects connects to ISP router with DHCP).

Both the ISP modem/router and the airport extreme are creating two different "wifi networks", that belong to the same IP network (192.168.0.0).

I can enter to each of this Wifi networks, get an IP address in both cases and start using the internet.

However, when I use it on my ISP router, everything works perfectly, however, when I use it on the airport network, it fails from time to time.

If I start pinging an external IP address (e.g.: 8.8.8.8), I never lost a package on ISP router network, but I lose packets often on airport extreme network.

Also, if I ping ISP router from the airport extreme network I lose packets from time to time. It also happens viceversa. I never lose packets when pinging the router whose providing the network I am connected at.

All the settings on the airport extreme are defaults (except that I have created a 5GHz additional network).

Can you provide any tips as how to solve the issue? I read somewhere that disabling ipv6 connection sharing could solve the issue, but it hasn't. Thanks in advance

If you have the Ethernet cable from your ISP router connected to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme, disconnect the cable and connect it to one of the three LAN <--> ports on the AirPort to see if that will help with the issue.

However, if you have the Ethernet cable from the ISP router already connected to one of the LAN <--> ports on the AirPort Extreme, then you will need to reset the AirPort Extreme back to factory default settings and then set it up again.

If you still have issues, the AiPort Extreme is defective, and will need to be replaced.

I managed to solve it by calling the ISP and they disabled NAT,  so my airport extreme nows get the public address directly.

I won't be able to test your suggestion, as I would have to go to this painless phone call twice, but it makes a lot of sense. Should you always use LAN ports when in bridge mode?

thanks A LOT anyway! I really appreciate

I managed to solve it by calling the ISP and they disabled NAT,  so my airport extreme nows get the public address directly.

Then, something is wrong with your setup if you are saying that the AirPort Extreme is still operating in Bridge Mode after the ISP disabled NAT. Or, in other words, if the AirPort Extreme is receiving a public IP address at its WAN port, then the AirPort Extreme must be set up in Router Mode of DHCP and NAT......not Bridge Mode.....which Apple calls "Off (Bridge Mode)".

Should you always use LAN ports when in bridge mode?

It makes no difference whether you use the WAN or LAN ports when the AirPort is in Bridge Mode, since there is no WAN or routing function when the AirPort is in Bridge Mode, so all ports behave the same.....as LAN ports....when the AirPort is set up to operate in Bridge Mode.

I suggested using or trying a LAN port to eliminate the possibility of a possibly defective WAN port.
