iOS 10 can't download photos

hello,

ever since i updated dated to iOS 10 my pc no longer shows my iPhone as a device when I attach it using a USB. I used to be able to attach my phone and open my pictures on my computer so I could save them to my pC. Please help me figure out how to reach my photos again.

My computer is trusted and the iPhone will sync to iTunes but there is no way that let's me download the photos to my PC. I can find the iPhone in the "device and printers" area but that doesn't allow me to download anything either. Before the update, I just had to plug my phone in to the computer and an option popped up to import photos and videos. That does not happen anymore. The links provided above are not helpful as they instruct you from the Windows website how to download from a camera which appears on the computer as a device with removable storage and, therefore, allows you to download. If you know of any way to download photos from my iPhone 6, recently updated with iOS10 to my Windows 7 PC, I would greatly appreciate the help.

I had the exact same problem! I tried on a few computers that I KNOW worked in the past. I don't know why this worked, but it did:

1) Checked that Apple USB driver was installed (it was)

2) Restarted the phone.

3) Plugged the phone into a USB port I knew had worked.

4) Navigated to Devices and Printers, and saw in the "Unknown" category, a generic Apple iPhone.

5) Right-clicked and chose Properties. I then also tried Troubleshoot (it didn't find anything). Note also you can navigate to the file structure on the phone, so worst case you could always get them that way.

6) Unplugged, and then replugged the USB into the phone. Voila.

Again I don't know why, but I suspect I had to help win7 find the ios 10 phone (it's a 5s).

Update: Win10 was a pain, but I got it to work:

1) Update to the latest iTunes. I plugged it in after that, and was able to import pictures. However....

2) It then lost any ability for iTunes to recognize the device

3) Follow the steps here to update the driver: If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support
(My iphone 5s was found under "portable devices" in Win10.)

4) Unplug and plug, and now it can be found in iTunes AND in importing pictures (I use Adobe Bridge). For the latter, on the phone you'll have to OK the request to access the phone's photos and videos.

A simpler solution to this if you will.

Download iCloud on your windows computer.

http://www.apple.com/in/icloud/setup/pc.html

And let your computer download all the photos by right clicking on the icloud taskbar icon and clicking download photos.
It's there in the bottom right corner where you have the volume/network/battery status icons.

Done.

Never worry about syncing ever again.

I have been having this problem too (though I am on an older OS - Vista, with iphone 6). This is what I've done - though it is a pain.

When I've connected the iphone to the USB, and I can't see photos on the iphone using file explorer, I go into the Devices, and you will see "Apple Mobile Device Driver". I click on that and update, and select choose driver. Two options are presented: 1) Apple Mobile Device Driver, and 2) Photo driver. I choose Photo Driver. The iphone is now visible in Windows file explorer after you hit "trust this computer" on your iphone. I can now copy/cut photos from my iphone to my computer.

When I am done, I go back to Devices, and click on update driver of the Photo Driver, and go through the process again, but this time, I select Apple Mobile Device Driver. Now the iphone can be synced again with the computer.

It's almost as if the new Apple Mobile Device Driver is split - it doesn't handle the file transfers like it used to.

I tried to repeat your process, but no joy!

I just want to plug my phone into my computer, open up windows explorer, click on the iPhone, and download my pictures.

I don't want to use iTunes.

I don't want to use iCloud.

I don't want to have to email them to myself.

I don't want the computer to try and automatically sync with my phone and download what it thinks I want it to download.

Someone please help!

Hi, had this problem as well on a Windows machine. The way it got solved for me was going to Start->Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->AutoPlay, and going to the iPhone device, selecting the appropriate action you want ("Ask me every time", "Import pictures and videos using Windows", etc), click Save, and connect the iPhone to the computer via USB. After upgrading to iOS 10, for some reason the action was greyed out, so the iPhone would not even show up in the windows directory, although it would still sync in iTunes. Hope this helps!
