Q: Air Play Works but its hit or miss...

Hi All:

im sure this issue is not unique but if some can give me tips or let me know what I'm doing wrong this would be great.

OK so, I am using Amazon Prime Video on my iPhone and I am trying to cast it to my Apple TV. When I select the Apple TV from the control panel, it begins to send it but then the video will stop or show it's loading and not come on my tv.

The weird thing is, once I stop trying to cast it, the movie begins playing almost immediately on the phone. It's hit or miss but most days it will not cast and I just give up and watch it on my phone.

Im on the same network as the Apple TV and the signal is strong so I'm not sure what the issue could be.

Any advice or thoughts would be a great help.

Paul

This will be dependent on the network. Checking the signal strength on the device won't be accurate as it doesn't account for any issues. You would need a network report from istumbler, netstumbler or similar. Along with signal strength you would see any noise detected and nearby networks. Using Ethernet would also help verify as would testing on another network.

If your iPhone is connected to the internet via a Wi-Fi network and then you're streaming from iPhone to TV over the same Wi-Fi, you might simply be overwhelming your network.

YEah, I thought that but I said to myself there has to be an easier answer than going that route. I mean, I have istumbler but I thought there had to be something simpler than analyzing data over my network.

I Will take a look though and post back here what I find.

    THanks for the help.

Hi. I've a few questions. Are you using basic AirPlay or mirroring? What version iOS are you using? What version Apple TV is it, with what software? See Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support is not sure. Are you using any type of VPN, unblocker, or DNS service?

    Sorry, here are the details:

    using Apple TV 4th gen

ios 10 with the iPhone 6plus

and in ios10 there is no option like in previous versions where you select Airplay or mirroring,  it just uses airplay now.

In iOS 10, basic AirPlay has been moved to the right hand pane of Control Center. Swipe left to see the list of AirPlay devices, or an icon to tap if on iPhone. The icon is an up arrow into concentric circles.

Have you updated Apple TV to tvOS 10? Are you using a VPN or unblocker? This can affect results.

Yes there are, it's just laid out differently. When you first swipe up to control centre you will see the option for mirroring, swiping right to left will bring up another pane with music controls and basic airplay

Mirroring of course uses more resources but either way you will need to troubleshoot the network.

    Thanks Diana...

I will have to check the network and see when it does it again because of course it's not doing it now.

    thanks again,
