The directions automatically quit on my Apple Watch when I arrived at my destination before watchOS 3. I am used to that behavior so it is often a long time before I use my Watch again and find that direction are still running and using power.
Is there a new preference or setting to change this behavior back to the way that it used to be?
Why would you want the directions to remain on the watch after you arrive and quit directions on the iPhone?

To stop directions on your watch: open the Maps app on your watch > press firmly on the display > tap on Stop Directions.

Thank you but I understand how to stop the app. My point is why should I have to? Once I arrive at my destination and tap End on my iPhone, the Watch should return to its normal watch face. It should not require any further action on my part.
