Q: ipad not working with itunes 11.4 and itunes 12.2.2 since update to ios 10.0.2

Since updating to ios 9.3.5 on my ipad mini 2, I was not able to access to my mac mini v.1,1 running os 10.6.8 with itunes v.11.4, but was able to run on my early macbook air v.1,1 running on os os10.7.5. NOW!, since the latest update to ios 10.0.2, it is not functioning on either of my units. Is there something I'm missing other than a whole new computer just to run the ipad?

iPad Mini, iOS 9.3.5, No access with iTunes 11.4

That is because a device with iOS 10.x requires iTunes 12.5.1, which requires Windows 7 or above, or OS X 12.9.5 or above. Your OS X needs to be updated if possible. If not, then you cannot use the newer devices and iOS with that Mac.

That's too bad. My units run perfectly fine except the ipad issue. This is not what I expected from Apple. I am due for an upgrade to a new iphone but I'm having second thoughts about it now. Apple use to be so user friendly. What happened?

I couldn't answer that, I'm a user, just like you. I'm not a Mac user however. I do know that your version of OS X has been around for a little bit, so an upgrade would be expected. The later version of iTunes for Windows requires 7 or above, and people are complaining about not being able to use XP or Vista, but even Microsoft is not supporting those versions any longer. They have been through Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and now 10. There has been a great deal of progression. I don't know the Mac progression, but I believe they are on 10.11 or 10.12 right now, so you an see it has been a little while since 10.7, which you report.

That's not entirely true. I also use an old IBM ThinkPad running on Windows XP sp3 with iTunes v.12.1.3.6 and the ipad ios 10.0.2 runs perfectly well with it.

That my friend is an anomaly. For the most part, the latest version of iTunes will not support iOS 10. It is even indicated on the iTunes download page. Windows XP is a security risk. I should hope you do not use that on the internet.

Security is not my concern with XP. I use it mainly for music playback. My problem is I can no longer backup my ipad onto my Macs. I had lost some playlists since the updates and now its totally useless because I cannot restore or access it. I am aware my Macs are outdated but I think this latest ios is forcing us buy newer Macs.

You can look at it however you wish. Apple can determine what will support what. Unfortunately, iOS 10.x requires OS X 10.9.5 or above. How you deal with that is up to you.

When you say the iPad runs with the computer and Windows XP, what do you mean runs? It is syncing, backing up, etc.?

You do not, necessarily, need a new Mac to run a more modern OS operating system.

What is the year and model of your Mac?

Your Mac maybe able to run newer Mac OS versions.

I am running a late 2009 iMac that is 7 years old and can run the latest OS versions, if I choose.
