Increasing RAM has no effect on startup time, but may improve OS and app performance.

Start up and app launch times are greatly affected by drive speed, so a faster hard drive, or upgrading/adding a solid state drive (SSD), is what would improve them.

In the meantime, check System Preferences > Users & Groups > Startup Items and remove any apps that can wait to be launched manually when you need them.

Many users, including me, also report faster startups with macOS Sierra. You might want to consider updating your OS, but check all other related considerations, such as if your essential apps have compatible versions.
