Q: iPhone power drain

iPhone 5 goes from 100% to single digits after little or no usage.  No recent changes in apps, notifications, etc.  When plugged in it jumps back to about 80%.  This has been happening on iOS 9 and 10.  Anyone know what's going on and how to fix it?

    Hi there, 1lawyer!

Thanks so much for using the Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, I'm understanding that your iPhone 5 battery isn't performing as expected. I rely on my own iPhone throughout the day, so I know it's important that there are no surprises with battery life. I'd be happy to help!

There could be a number of things causing the battery to drain faster than expected. To help, I would suggest starting by looking over the following article. It gives instructions on how to look at your battery usage, and help identify what is using more of the battery.

About the battery usage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Based on your findings, you may want to adjust some settings, like disabling Wi-Fi Assist and certain apps from accessing cellular data under Settings > Cellular, both of which can cause the battery to expend more energy. The following article will give you some more information on Wi-Fi Assist.

I would also recommend making sure you have a good connection with your carrier's network. Your iPhone will work harder to find and maintain a signal if you are in a low-coverage area.  You can also check out the "General Tips" and "Tips for iOS" sections at the website linked below, which will help make sure you get the most out of each charge.
