Q: Cannot export completed project

I am using FC Pro v 10.2.3 on my iMac with El Capitan 10.11.6.

I have been using FCP for years and have not encountered this problem until recently.

I have just completed a project 50 mins long and have been trying to export (share) it to Apple device 1080p. It goes through the motions of exporting and tells me that the share has been successful, but the output does not exist anywhere (I have searched the whole computer). The same project I have successfully exported to Apple device 720p, and this is hidden away as usual in iTunes.

OK the 750p is good for DVD's but not good enough for my media player.

Any ideas as to why it will no longer output to  Apple 1080p please ?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11), Tunderbolt HDD 3Tb & 6Tb FCPX 10.2

The above setting should send a copy to iTunes>Home Movies and Shared Items in the Package Contents.

Note: After closing FCP X the Shared file is automatically dumped.

Thanks for the reply Al, but what you tell me is exactly what I have always done. Like I said, I have had no problem until now. 'Share' to Library has always worked. It runs for about 45 minutes and then reports that the 'Share was successful', but it just does not exist anywhere on the computer. I've tried it about 6 times now, but no result in 1080p.

    Works OK in 720.

I may well try the upgrade to Sierra, but was reluctant to do this until the project was finished and off the computer. Upgrading anything part way through an edit is always asking for trouble.

    Any further thoughts appreciated.

Suggest a test export. Use the Range tool to select a short section of the timeline and Share > AD 1080p. Select the library > Reveal in Finder. Go inside the library (Show Package Contents) and in your event folder, open the Shared Items folder. There should be another folder inside – hopefully with your movie.

Post back and let us know.

Ok Russ, I've done that. Used the range tool, shared to Library, and there is the (short) m4v film as it should be.

BUT it was where I would normally expect to find it ...in iTunes music > Home Videos, not in any package or shared item, so no need to reveal the contents.

I tried earlier on a couple of occasions selecting the range of the whole film and exporting (sharing) it, but that just did nothing other than go through the motions as usual with no end result.

Hey, life's a mystery. I wonder if the whole film could be too long @ 51 mins ? I also made a 2 minute short version, and had no problems with that at all. Got 24 Gb of RAM so it should cope.

I keep the actual MOVIE Library on a separate HDD, and always check there to see if it has popped-up there, but no sign of it.

    Thanks for the thoughts.

Tell us about the separate drive, type, format, connection. May be a factor.

So do a Finder search on that test export.

It is a La Cie 3 TB external SATA connected by lightning. Formatted for MAC  OS X extended, and has 3TB free.

Are you referring to the Movies folder in iTunes Media? Or is your iTunes library is on your system (boot) drive? If I do a Spotlight search on a FCP AD export to iTunes it returns the correct location in the iTunes library.

OK Russ, I've done that as a matter of routine, but I can confirm that the ONLY place where the test output now exists  is in  >Music > iTunes > iTunes Music > Home Videos. This is where I would normally expect to find it. It does not appear in the external HDD Library.

    How about bypassing iTunes completely?

If under "Settings", you choose When Done: Do Nothing,

you will be prompted to choose where to save the resulting file. No ambiguity there, just choose a file name and a folder to store it. You can always add it to your iTunes library later.

You know, that is so simple that it must be right!

I'll try it and see if it helps.

I will then upgrade to Sierra and see if the glitch disappears.

    Thanks

Yes the output movie is still there, so that will enable me to get the file off the computer.

    Thanks
