Q: Frequent kernel panics, EtreCheck "good"

Previously discussed as "Frequent kernel panics on retiring iMac." Suspected low memory so I doubled it, but iMac panicked within 5 minutes of startup. Following is the EtreCheck run successfully after a second panic and the panic report generated when it panicked while running EtreCheck after the first. Surely would appreciate any hints.

EtreCheck version: 3.0.6 (315)

Report generated 2016-10-02 16:05:50

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime 3:57

Performance: Good

You've installed one of the worst, in the opinion of most of us users here, malware apps available, MacKeeper.  It's been proven to be so very toxic to Macs.

Read this user tip: Do not install MacKeeper.  It also has some links to uninstallers.  You can also do a Google search for "uninstall MacKeeper" to get links to the MacKeeper site for uninstallers. Once you've removed the offending files rerun Etrecheck to confirm you've removed them successfully.

You can also check to see if you've removed all of the files by downloading and running Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name  and the developer's name in the file name.  For example for CleanMyMac you'd do two searches:

    1 - Name contains mackeeper

    2 - Name contains zerobit

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

Where did you get the memory modules that are in your Mac?  Are they from Apple?  If not where did you get them?

Old Toad is right, your panic started when MacKeeper loaded. Uninstall it and things should get back to normal.

Well, it lasted about 25 hours; thought it was licked. All vestiges of MK removed according to Etre and FAF; Etre showed nothing after the panic. Here's the report.

Your graphics card may be failing. Try running the Apple Hardware Test and see if it reports anything.

Also you should remove the third party ram and reinstall the original and test.

Hardware Test won't come up. Tried 3 times with upgraded memory holding the D key for various intervals, nothing. Swapped back the original memory, still no Hardware Test. I'm using a ReadMe from 2009; did the key change? Otherwise I'll monitor with the original memory. Perhaps one problem solved by removing MK but another created with the memory upgrade. What did you (and Old Toad) see that bothered you about the upgraded memory?

First the AHT is located on disc two of your original gray install discs, you have to insert the disc then restart while holding the D key. On later model iMacs it was loaded onto the hard drive.

Ram is often the cause of a kernel panic, cheap ram especially, that's why he asked what brand it was. Macs require exact spec ram and many of the bargain basement vendors play fast and loose with the specs but advertise that their ram will work with Macs. Quality third larty Mac ram only comes from a few vendors, OWC and Crucial are two of the leaders. Since your iMac had 8Gb of ram it was obvious to us that you had upgraded.

Both panic reports did indicate a possible GPU issue.

More memory problems--not the computer's, mine. I don't recall receiving install disks with this machine and they're not where they should be if I did. However I moved recently and they may have become separated; I'll keep looking. It's stable since removing MK and using the original RAM, so my inclination is to just replace it sooner than I planned; it seems the path of least resistance. Thanks much for Curly's insight; I've learned a lot.

Out of curiosity, what RAM did you install? PNY, Corsair, and Kingston ValueRAM are known troublemakers in Intel-based Macs.

Interesting that you mention the brands I most often saw at the retailers. In this case Corsair, from a nationwide Silicon Valley-based retailer. PNY is big at BB.

To "Curly" Mike: Extended AHT found nothing. Retirement party coming.

AHT is often unreliable unless it reports an error, then it's pretty much right on. But it's all we have so we have to at least try it. You may not have a hardware issue at all, but the extensions in the backtrace all point to the graphics card. If it stays stable with the original ram rather than spend $2,000 or more for a replacement you can get 8Gb of quality guarenteed ram at OWC for $50 https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/8566DDR3S8GP/

I appreciate knowing a reliable source. As you know in the past the usual situation was eventually an OS update would require more RAM than standard, which could be upgraded, and then a subsequent update would require a higher processor speed; then you knew your Mac was entering retirement. This time no higher memory requirement but rather age, so Sierra incompatibility sneaked up on me. This iMac ran nicely faster (most of the time) with the schlocky 8 GB, so I might just patronize OWC for $50, but it's just a matter of time for this machine. Gives me some time to bone up on migrating everything to a younger recruit. Are there noticeable signs of a failing graphics card?

Sometimes you get warnings sometimes not, but when one does it's usually graphics anomilies like pixelating, vertical stripes visible on the display, unexpected shutdowns and oh yeah......kernel panics.

I'm somewhat in the same boat as my main machine is a late 2009 that runs like a champ. When it goes I don't know what I'm going to replace it with as I'm underwhelmed with the new iMacs and current versions of OS X.
