Word for Mac 2016 does not retain font in footnote numbers

I just installed Word 2016 on my Mac using OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6. When I create footnotes, the reference number is always in some sans serif font (Calibri? Arial?), regardless of the font I am using. (It does not matter which font I am using.) The font window in the ribbon says the reference is in the font I am using but it is not (see screen shot). I have the footnote reference configured properly in Styles. It worked just fine before but not since I "upgraded" to Word 2016. Any ideas?
