Q: Bad iTunes importer strips metadata

It seems I'm the only one that this happens to.  I've learned, through painful experience, to back up all of my music files.  I've been importing music for well over 10 years now, and I've never seen anything like this before.

So my computer crashed, and I lost everything, including my update to Windows 10.  I had to reset to Windows 7, and download new updates, and downloaded the newest version of iTunes.  But, I thought, at least I won't have to re-import my music.

So, I start trying to import my music, and almost everything is imported with no album information, no track information, no album artist, no artwork, nothing except for numbered track names.  I thought it was my files, so I looked at the next batch that I was going to import to see if I could manually add that information before I imported them, and found that all that information was showing up in the files.  Album info, track listings, year, artist info, everything was there.  So I imported that very folder, and everything showed up blank except for the track name, and a new folder was created called "Unknown Artist".

Example:  I have an album by the world-famous (and fictional) Barking Imbeciles called Warmth of an October Fire.  The first track is the awesome title track "Warmth of an October Fire", the second track is "Snare Drum Follies", and the third track is entitled "Bossy Nova".  When I import this awesome album by way of CD, everything is hunky-dory.  But when I try to import it by way of my pre-existing music files, it only looks like this:

01 Warmth of an October Fire

02 Snare Drum Follies

03 Bossy Nova

No artist info, no track numbers, no disc numbers, no album info, no year given, nothing at all.  When I look at the file information that shows up in the "Unknown Artist" folder, all of the information except for the numbered track name is stripped off.

Like I said, I've never seen anything like this before.  There's no telling how long this bug (or whatever it is) has been around.  I've never had any problems with iTunes along these lines before, but it has been a while since the last time I imported music files via pre-existing files.

Right now, I'm just importing everything via CD.  I figure it will be shorter in the long run and less frustrating.  Unless somebody has a better idea?
