Is Pages 6.0 lagging badly for anyone else?
Since updating to Pages 6.0 I've started experiencing bad lag when typing. Lots of spinning wheel. Is this happening to anyone else? Ideas?
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), iOS 9.2.1

Grammar/Spelling checking on? That is a major cause of slow downs in recent versions of Pages.
Doesn't sound too bad as a document, but that is without seeing it. The tabs and formatting don't really matter. It is more to do with complex Textflow causing recalculation of type fit.
Have you broken the document up with Section Breaks, because that stops the long recalculation of text flow. It only has to work out layouts to the next break when you edit.
Are the photos appropriately sized? They should be about 300dpi at the size used in the document.
Pages is not smart so each photo counts even if they are the same, repeated. Shadows, reflections transparency all add to the calculation load.

Where are you saving to?
How much free space do you have on your hard disk
There are several reasons why Pages may be running slow.
1. It is saving remotely, even with a fast connection, that will be way slower than saving to your own hard drive.
2. There is less than 10% free on your hard drive for paging files
3. There are many objects in your document with complicated layout, such as word wrap, shadows, transparency etc.
4. Your document is large

Good news, version 6.3.1 solved the problem for me. Tested it with 6.3 again and updated, problem gone. I'm pretty content now!
I have the same problem and after doing some testing I believe it also has to do with paragraphs. For me the typing lag (severe typing lag, many words pouring in long after I typed) occurs when one paragraph spans to the next page. This is a frequent occurrence when writing a book, for example. When you create a paragraph by hitting enter, typing performance returns instantly.
The same issue occurs on a 2013 Mac Pro as well as a 2014 Mac Book Pro.
I have tried to reinstall the application, change all fonts to default ones, the behavior stays the same and can easily be replicated.
That bug has been around for a while now and there does not seem to be a quick fix on the user side.
You are typing on a document stored on an Apple Server how many miles from you, across countless network hops, and continously variable network connection. That by itself has its own propagation delays, but Pages v5 and v6 also abhor large documents which will cause very slow application performance even on a local drive.
Pages '09 v4.3 is a smaller, more efficiently written application with a substantially less complicated document architecture. It will sing while Pages v5/v6 belch.
Actually Pages '09 is using iCloud. I have exported the 6.3 version and saved it to iCloud then I open the newly exported version in Pages '09 and there is no lag. So it seems that if I am working on a long document, then Pages '09 is the program to use. This then eliminates Pages 6.3 when writing a book, which is what I am doing. Very sad.
That is one of the many obvious problems with using iCloud, that Apple glosses over, it is as slow as your connection and gets worse the larger your file gets.
Pages '09 is probably not using iCloud and is naturally faster and more efficient than Pages 5 and 6 which are both dogs.

I turned off the grammar/spelling check awhile ago. It was getting on my nerves. Yes the document is broken up in Sections. Each new chapter is a new section with the page number continuing from the previous section. I did this so I could have the Chapter name in the header, along with the Title name. (Each section has a different chapter name in the header.) I've converted it to Word 2011 and am currently working on it there and not having the lagging problem so far and the conversion has accepted the different chapter names in the header so presumably it accepted the section breaks. Time will tell I suppose. Thinking about it, I think I only noticed the obvious lagging after I divided it into sections (originally it was not in sections) so that probably is the reason. It's a shame that it lags after breaking up in sections as it was easier to use than Word but I guess I'll have to stick to Word now. Thanks again for your info.
To check if your Mac is genuinely working to the Cloud, turn off your Internet and see if you can still work on your file.
Peter
The only way to be certain that that is what it is, is to turn off your Internet, as I said above.
Peter
Oh and it’s the same on iOS too. So that’s interesting. I filed a bug with Apple but am now also hard pressed to stick with Pages. Sigh.
You are referring to iCloud Drive? Pages '09 documents do not sync on iCloud, there is no option for them.
If you look in the System Preferences for iCloud you probably have Optimize Mac Storage checked which means
The full contents of iCloud Drive will be stored on this Mac if you have enough space. Older Documents will be stored only in the Cloud when space is needed.
That didn't exist when iCloud first came out and made life impossible for Pages '09 users because iCloud was converting Pages '09 files.
But a quick test shows, yes you can save to iCloud Drive. What that means depends on what you have checked in Preferences.
Peter
After loading the document from iCloud, I turned off the Internet, but the lagging is still the problem. Pages 6.? is useless when working with long documents. Could it be that since Apple has built in collaboration that the program is always looking for others editing the document?
Lyle
Typically it takes about five seconds to type each character. Admittedly, the document that I am working on is a very long document stored on iCloud. However if I uses Pages 4.3 (09) there is no lag.
When moving the document from iCloud Drive to Dropbox, the slow typing lag remains. So not a problem of iCloud Drive per se.
