Place the playhead over the frame you want for the still image. In the share menu choose 'image'.

I do not see an option to select "image" in the share menu.

My answer was for iMovie 10. Is that your version or are you using an older version? If you have iMovie 10.1.2 then open iMovie holding down the command and option keys and delete preferences. See if this restores the image option in share. I assume that since it wasn't in the share menu then it also was not there in the share button dropdown at the top of the window above the browser.

I usually just take a screen shot of the project preview screen, that will give you a .jpg on your desktop that you can

drag back into the project as a still.     To take a screen shot, display the frame you want to take a still of, then press

Command-Shift-4 simultaneously and while pressing your mouse or track pad outline the perimeter of the clip on the preview screen with the cursor that has now morphed into cross-hairs.   When you release your mouse or track pad, the screen shot will be taken.

l have noticed that the screen shot renders a larger file size than the share-to-image procedure.  I can't tell if that gives a better resolution to the eye, as both procedures work well.
