ios 10 calendar filtering out entries

Before in iOS 9 / iPhone 6s, if I invited a family member to an event from my calendar AND their calendar was shared with me, i would see two items on my calendar:

1) my original event that let me add recipients, change event info, etc.

2) their copy of the event from their shared calendar.

Note both are google calendars viewed in the native calendar app. Starting with iOS 10 / iPhone 7, whenever there is a shared event I see:

1) only their copy of the event from their calendar. that I cannot edit or add people to.

I think iOS 10 may be filtering out duplicate events, and in my case it filters out the wrong one. I know my events are still there because if I hide their calendar, my original event appears. But then I can't see the other items on their calendar.

I tried removing / re-adding my calendar in Settings with no change in behavior.

I think this may be a bug? Happy to test additional steps if anyone has ideas.
