Oct 3, 2016 6:45 AM in response to chillarby turingtest2,Try holding down ctrl+shift when you launch iTunes, keep holding until you see a dialog box, then click continue. This opens iTunes in its safe mode which sometimes fixes issues with stuck or inaccessible options.
Alternatively try right-clicking on the iTunes icon and using run as administrator. Doing this once sometimes fixes certain preference issues.
If those haven't helped try deleting C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml which forces iTunes to create a fresh copy. You'll need to check all your other settings after doing this.
Next try Fix unexpected quits or launch issues in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support and use the advice there to see if the issue is limited to a particular library or user profile.
Or see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates and try a complete tear down and rebuild. If you have a 64-bit system you could also try the "for older video cards" release.

Oct 3, 2016 2:11 PM in response to turingtest2by chillar,Thank you for your help. Unfortunately none of the suggestions seemed to help. I did however come to think of the fact that I recently connected my computer to my stereo via an external USB DAC (before that I just used the internal Realtek 1150 soundcard). Is it possible that this has greyed out those settings?

Oct 3, 2016 4:04 PM in response to chillarby turingtest2,Your crossfade and sound enhancer options are greyed out too, so I think it is really an iTunes issue. Did you get a chance to test behaviour in a new profile?

Oct 4, 2016 1:25 AM in response to turingtest2by chillar,I did try and create a new profile and also uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, both to no avail. I am indeed starting to lean towards the external DAC having something to do with it. At any rate I am still happy with the sound and nothing matches iTunes when it comes to ease of use. Thank you for your time.

Maybe it will sort itself out next time iTunes gets updated.
